I saw a blurb that he takes a lot of pride out of playing SS, talking a ton and being the leader of the defense. But when moved to 3B, it's like he gets quiet, not knowing his role and he's confused by what he's allowed to say or do. Plausible? Personally, I doubt it, but who knows?

Anyone have any insight as to why Baez is suddenly falling apart in the field. I saw him play this year and he stood out as a ridiculously polished defender, especially after all the reports that pegged him as moving off of SS.

 

Aren't the AZ fields notoriously crappy for fielding (I feel like I hear that every year in spring training, along with the "high skies" thing). Not that that would explain the throwing errors.

Some of his errors are coming at 3B, a position he hasn't played before.

 

He's going to rack up errors no matter what.

It is a pretty small sample and 33% of his errors have come at third base. I wouldn't read anything into it yet.

Just was told this by a buddy of mine who works for the AFL...

 

I wasn't completely paying attention (lol) but from what I gathered, Baezwas on second or so and there was a freak play at first where a hard grounder hit the base at first and went way up in the air and the fielder got to it but not in time to get the batter. Everyone was kind of like "gee that was weird" and standing around collecting themselves, resigned to the fact that they gave up a freak infield single that was nobody's fault... and all the sudden Javi just ran home from third. There was probably a good 5-10 dead seconds in there, but time was never called.

 

 

He'll do whatever the [expletive] he wants.

i know, and i wasn't expecting him to rake, but still. i think all of us were hoping he would do better than he's doing right now. he still has time to turn this stint around though, and it's not like he's been atrocious.

I'm completely okay with it. I think he's a guy that needs to struggle to get that he'll need to change his approach to have long term success. I really think that's part of the reason he was picked to go to the AFL. He gets a taste of higher level pitching that he can't completely dominate and it allows the FO to reinforce that he has some things to learn still. If you can do that without wrecking his confidence, I think that'll go a long way to his long term development.

He held his own against much more advanced pitching and continued to show the flashes of talent. I'm happy with how it turned out, even if it was cut short.
