if they really are going to have that much to spend, they should be more patient. they didn't really need to take on crawford and beckett to get a gonzalez type value. if you're patient you'll eventually get somebody as good as gonzalez at the same price. as a cubs fan, i'm glad theyre already getting into bad contracts like crawford and ethier. let them be good now.

Not if every team is flush with money like they appear to be.

I don't think everybody is going to be willing to go at that new tax guns blazing. Even the Yankees and Red Sox are looking to pare down before the penalties hit.

Most teams aren't close to the luxury tax ceiling.

Maybe it's not fair to compare the penalties to that of the NBA, but I can't see how these penalties should affect a team like the Yankees. To me, it's just a change in philosophy going from George to Hal and Hank. I know George didn't always meddle Cashman into the best moves, but no one can ever deny his want to win. I think it's fair to question his sons at this point. But the luxury tax is a 17.5% tax on the overage in year 1, from a 189 mill payroll. It moves to 30, 40, and tops out at a 50% penalty in year 4. If a team carries a 300 mill payroll, it's basically a 55 mill tax from year 4 and past. With the TV deals these teams are getting, it's just not that much when you're making it back that easily. The Yankees are going to have to change some things up or the Dodgers are very likely yo become the new team everyone loves to hate.

The Yankees aren't in any danger of having the Dodgers overtake them.

Before I 'love to hate' the Dodgers they might have to do something like ... put together a team that can pull ahead of the Giants. It's certainly going to take more than acquiring a bunch of crap contracts for players who's names far exceed their production. If I ever "hated" the Yankees it's only because they sweep in and overpay for the players in their 2nd contracts that were brought and developed by smaller markets who can't compete. Not that they ate those bad 2nd contracts later when teams were looking to get rid of them when performance didn't match pay. Hanley Ramirez is being paid $15 million and has produced 0.7 WAR for the Dodgers so far. If that's what an unfair financial competitive advantage looks like, I'm not that frightened.

What they've done isn't about this year for the most part. But having a lineup that has Crawford, Hanley, Kemp, Gonzo, and Ethier is more than formidable. And I can see them trying to add another solid bat as well to it. I don't think Crawford's done whatsoever though and I at least acknowledge that could spark a debate.

They've got Kershaw and Billingsley and enough back end guys to be solid in the rotation, but I still fully expect them to go get another TOR arm over the offseason. The good news for us is that this group could easily be out of their primes as a collective unit once we're good and they won't have enough to throw a true superteam out there on top of what they've spent. But I definitely see them as the favorites in the NL for the next 2-3 years and will continue to be really good after that, just declining a bit.

Basically, I figure they'll add another bat and a TOR arm somehow. One thru trade and one thru FA by the time next season starts.
