I might have this concern if the Delgado trade hadn't been agreed to. Taking both trades into account, Atlanta simply looked like a desperate team willing to overpay from a position of depth for a major league need. Theo simply took advantage of that.

Very reminiscent of the Rizzo trade. It seems like the Braves felt like they had enough near-ready starting pitchers that they just didn't need Vizcaino.

Without the injury, there's no question. My only reservation is that while we may have all the medical records in the world, The Braves are more familiar with his recovery situation. It just seems that if his recovery was coming along perfectly, they wouldn't have traded a guy with ace potential for a mid rotation at best starter (yes, even if we did include Reed Johnson) no matter how much money we picked up. If so, teams would be lining up with better pitchers than Maholm for him. Nobody finds it weird that despite tw difference in their current seasons, the Twins got a pile of junk for Liriano and we got a top 50 prospect for Maholm?

Liriano was 3-10 with a 5.31 ERA and is FA-to-be

Maholm was 9-6 with a 3.74 ERA and has a cheap option

so while i'm probably the biggest Liriano fan there is, i'm not surprised at all that Liriano was a much tougher sell at the deadline

There's also the matter of Maholm pitching very well this season and being under control for another season on a very team friendly deal, while Liriano has struggled over the entirety of the season and is a rental.

Often a contending team believes a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Vizcaino obviously has a ton of potential, but he is still unproven at the ML level and coming off of TJS. As others have posted, stocking our system with prospects increases the odds that some of them will be successful at the ML level. Meanwhile the Braves know exactly what they got in Maholm and Johnson.

@ESPNChiCubs: Cubs blog: Dempster: I never turned down Braves deal http://t.co/0O2ZZzaT

So Theo was just [expletive] around with Ned Colletti for two weeks for his health before ultimately accepting a lesser package from the Rangers.

He never said no, just wanted time to think about it, ATL set an expiration on the offer and pulled it before Demp could make a decision.

well obviously they weren't going to wait around until there were 5 minutes left on the deadline for him to decide. His indecision was his decision. He knows that, regardless of what he says.

No, he made a decision but in an effort to save his ass he just didn't say anything officially.

According to what I read on twitter, Paul Maholm still leads the Cubs staff in wins.

Other than Samardzija (28) and Wood (24) no other pitchers made as many starts for the Cubs this year as Maholm (20). So yeah other than Wins being an awful [expletive] stat Maholm got the 3rd most amount of chances of the starters to get a win this year.
