The Cubs threatening to win the World Series is the only angle that can capture national attention on the scale of the 98 Home Run chase or the Red Sox in 03 and 04.

Consider that the Red Sox are just another big market club with occasional flareups of drama, there are (seemingly) no more roid monsters threatening to make a run at the single season home run record, and ARod's chase for the all time HR record will be a relative yawner now that he's a confirmed steroid cheat--if he can still even make a real run at it.

Jeter going after the all time hits record maybe? Anything else out there?

i'd imagine a hitting-streak getting to 45-50 games would be a big, big deal

I don't think that would resonate with the masses the same way the Cubs would or the HR record did. The hit steak just isn't that ubiquitous.

It's really no contest. The Cubs winning the World Series would be the biggest story in baseball since the Red Sox won it.

Maybe, MAYBE, someone winning it like 5 years in a row or something like that, but barring something that literally has no chance of happening (someone hitting 100 homers or going 30-0 pitching or a team winning 130 games), the Cubs are the biggest story.

It'd be a bigger story than the Red Sox

The Cubs have been a punchline for years in pop culture outside of sports (Colbert's done jokes about the, the famous Back to the Future reference among lots of other one). The Sox curse was famous but I really don't think they had the loser moniker down like the Cubs do. The Cubs winning would probably be one the biggest stories ever in sports.

No doubt about it. I only hope my dad and I live to see it.

yes but we need to think of something to top schilling painting his sock red

Baez, Castro and Soler will paint their skin white and all change their names to Joseph Smith so Kaplan and the like in the media start to sing praises about them and then we will win a world series.

A goat somehow gets on the infield. A batted ball hits the goat, turning a sure double play in the 9th inning into a 2-run infield single to win game 5 of the WS and put the Cubs up 3-2 in the series.

I dunno, I don't think a whole lot more people would be watching ballgames because of that though.

probably not, but the original post just asked what would get baseball national attention.

Well in that case if Albert Pujols went all OJ on some ex-gf or something, I bet that'd get baseball some national attention.

I think the intent of the question was more about what would draw a lot more eyeballs to baseball games than usual, but maybe I'm misinterpreting the point of this.

If Derek Jeter lost a foot or something in an accident his first game back (playing DH with a prosthetic) would get a ton of pub.

But yeah, I can't think of much else that would come close to topping Cubs in the WS.

ETA: A woman being allowed to play.

Allowed, good enough, whatever.

Although there are no hard and fast rules prohibiting females in the MLB, I'd imagine that there'd be some hoops to jump through even if she were good enough to play.
