i just think it's kind of weird to assume that he's going to be good, and then get all defensive/insulting when someone just tries to ask what his recent slump means. as if a guy who "mashed aaa pitching" has never failed to meet expectations in the majors. because that never happens in baseball.

he's probably the second most important player in the cubs organization right now, and he's in a critical part of his developmental career where he's trying to establish himself in the majors. why is it strange to want to discuss what has been a bad month for rizzo.... or the fact that his overall production so far in the majors this year is a below where most of us would have predicted when he was crushing the pcl?

seriously, look back through the thread when he was mashing. i was always hyping him up, and i still really like him. i haven't said anything bad about him, and even pointed out some of the positive things (that sneakypower got praised for) in the original post.

again, i don't really see why it's a problem to want to discuss the ups-and-downs of a key player who is breaking into the majors right now. like "who cares, his peripherals are mostly good and he mashed the pcl. if you don't think he's guaranteed to be awesome, you're stupid."

Just assuming he's going to be good is stupid, but I honestly see what there is to discuss at this point after a few weeks of scuffling outside of simply pointing out that he's struggling. It's to be expected that a young player with an adjusted approach is going to go through periods like this, and it's encouraging that he's going through it so far without any major warning flags.

in the castro thread, tim started a discussion about what his 2012 season says about the projection of his career. if rizzo ends the season with numbers disappointing (compared to expectations), then how does that change his outlook? i don't think any of us were expecting a sub .800 ops, so i don't see why it's irrational to ask when this starts to become a concern. i fully appreciate the tremendous strikeout percentage and stuff like that, but still. he's been bad longer than he's been good in the majors so far this season, so it's worth talking about. since it's a cubs message board.

Personally I think we're a ways away from being concerned when he's had less than 200 PA this season. Obviously his struggles aren't something to be dismissed, but there's still, what, 45 games to go? He's played in about that many games this year, so it's a bit premature to start talking about him finishing with an OPS below .800, though, yes, if he finished the year below .800 I'd be somewhat concerned.

Basically I don't see much to drawing a conclusion before the season's up given how short his has been.

dexter, I haven't really read this thread, and I don't know if I will get around to it, but just jumping in solely off of the discussions on the final couple pages

a) I don't think there's an issue to discuss his struggles because ... well ... it's been two completely different months, and in situations like that, even though I agree with nuts that the SS is too small to be too worried, I think it's worth asking some questions, whatever those questions are, and whether or not he'll make the adjustments to them.

b) All that said, I wonder if perhaps expectations were set too high for some reason? I look at his overall line right now (and granted, with the two extreme months, the overall line doesn't mean as much right now ... but I only note it because you point to his overall production), and I say to myself, that's fairly close to what I expected, particularly when you factor in his age. It's been odd how he's gotten here, but I really don't think the overall line is that troublesome. The issue right now is that he's had two extreme months, but I kept on cautioning people that, while I hoped for an every year A-S type, it was quite possible that he might simply be a moderately better version of say, Adam LaRoche.

Someone else mentioned it, but it bears repeating. This is not the case.

I sure hope they tweak Rizzo's ready position and timing mechanism over the winter.

+18.0 UZR/150 (+14.9 career)

Sample size be damned!!!!

Is there a specific innings played/PO/A ceiling that when a player typically hits it his UZR numbers normalize/are sustainable?

It's best not to pay any attention to defensive metrics at all, they are worthless at this point in time.

v LHP this year: .164/.195/.301

I noticed that too. He's one of the best first basemen in baseball against RHP, but he really has to work on facing lefties.

Or we can just play someone who feasts on LHP. Really aren't that hard to find.

.313/.368/.663 vs LHP @ Iowa.

I think he will be fine, just give him some time to figure it out.

ETA: His Iowa to Chicago vs LHP MLE comes out to .261/.294/.519

I think he could get to be in that range and that would be acceptable, hopefully a little more OBP.

Agree that 70-ish PAs isn't nearly enough time. And wouldn't surprise me that his early struggles were more pronounced against LHP. Just found the huge split interesting.

True. I guess it just depends on the makeup of the team in the future. Rizzo has shown the ability to hit lefties in the minors, so hopefully we won't have to make him part of a platoon.

How many PAs is his Iowa split based on?

85. The point is that he isn't inept vs LHP and that his numbers should go up from where they are now.

Last year he hit .299/.354/.448 vs LHP in AAA in 99 PA.

He is going to get better vs LHP.

Amid the general barrenness of this season, I prefer to focus on Rizzo's .355/.406/.558 line against righties.

Anyone know how Rizzo's ROY chances are looking?
