Boise walks off in the 9th. Candelario had an RBI single to tie it and Rock hit a walk-off RBI single.

IIRC, there's nothing wrong with Candelario's defense at third, but people wonder if he'll simply grow out of the position and have to move to 1B(or LF I guess).

How is Candelario's defensive reputation?

i vaguely recall some speculation that he might have to move off 3b. it's probably not based on much, though. scouting of the DSL is really poor.

love what he's doing so far though. if he can show power and patience in the NWL at age 18... well i'll be excited about that. really, even holding his own in that league would be solid.

That's the general consensus on Candelario. Per Boise's PBP guy, he's made a few good plays defensively thus far this season.

The concerns on Candelario growing out of the position aren't unwarranted, though. He's a big, big kid, particularly in the lower half, and he's only 18. If he's 180, then I'm in the prime shape of my life (I'm not).

All that said, I'm fairly pleased that the defensive reports have been so positive thus far. Some bigger guys can make it work and be passable-average at 3rd. He'll get every shot, as 3rd base is still pretty barren in the system after Vitters, if they keep Baez at SS.

I haven't really looked at everyone's farm in depth, but we may actually have the best position player talent in the minors. Maybe even if we assume Rizzo's graduating. Assuming Almora signs, we've got 3 top 50 types in Soler, Almora, and Baez, 2 other possible top 100 guys in Brett and Szczur, 2 guys showing progress and very talented in Vitters and Lake, a potential young stud in Candelario, young middle infielders with potential in Hernandez, Amaya, Torreyes, and Alcantara, and a pair of bonus guys in Acosta and Malave.

Gotta love the middle IF guys. Those last 4 you named, Lake and Baez is a pretty strong group, especially when you consider Barney and Castro are in their pre-arb years also. Throw in Jackson, Almora and Szczur all being capable of playing CF, if the old adage is true about being strong up the middle....the Cubs could be in really good shape in the future.

I tend to think that the position player strength is strong enough to bolster the system to a 8-12 ranking. Considering how awful the pitching is ... that's saying something.

Don't forget about Stephen Bruno when talking about MI guys. I'm a Marco Hernandez fan, but Bruno should get PT at shortstop. In many systems, he'd work his way up short. The ability is there, and worst case is that he comes up at 2nd. He played 3rd at UVA because Keith Werman had 2nd, and he lost the SS job to Chris Taylor when he got hurt. I'd also note that I'm still intrigued with Carlos Penalver, as his defensive reputation was supposed to be that good, although I don't recall AzPhil's reports being that glowing about him (I think he mentioned once that he looked good, but was still finding his game, or something like that).

Boise highlights:

Includes Candelario's HR, Amaya's "triple," Candelario's game-tying RBI single in the 9th and Shoulders' walk-off RBI single (went to the wall).

AZL Cubs lost 5-1 Box Score

CF T. Martin 0/4

2B D. Lockhart 1/3, BB, 2 E (3, throw, fielding)

SS C. Penalver 1/4, K

DH B. Carhart 2/2, 3B (1), 2 BB

3B T. Saunders 2/4, R, 2B (1)

LF R. Crawford 0/3, BB, 2 K

SP JY Kim 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 5-0 GO-FO

RP A. Jimenez 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 3 WP, 5-3 GO-FO

RP E. Elias 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HBP, 1-0 GO-FO

Now the box score shows Young-Il Jung as the starter for Mesa (a former Angel prospect) and Jin-Young Kim coming out of the pen in the 9th. I guess it could be Su-Min Jung who started but I'm not sure what is going on here. I hope Arizona Phil will have a post about this game to clarify.

Petition to add 21 year old CF Kelvin Encarnacion to the highlighted DSL players. Last year, in 223 AB he was .296/.396/.426 with 1 HR. This season, 43 AB he's .349/.525/.605 with 3 HR, seemingly adding a bit of power to his game. While he is older, could he be this years Candelerio?

Isn't Candelario this year's Candelario?

And uh, not really, since Candelario is 18 this year and was 17 last year.

And you acknowledging that he's old doesn't change the fact that he's 21 and in the DSL thereby, as far as I understand, making him not all that interesting.

There's a reason I haven't been including him - he's 20 (not 21) and still in the DSL and in his 3rd year in the DSL.

Candelario was 17 and in his first year in the DSL. They're not comparable.

But he seems to have made legit strides in each of his first 3 years, so that should be worth something. In 2010, he was a non entitiy at .233/.366/.295, and boosted himself to a respectable .822 OPS the following year. Considering his age, it could be interesting to push him to up a level. Dunston has CF in Boise, and I don't know if they want to cast him all the way to Peoria, although he is age appropriate. Again, I'm aware that it's just 13 games, so I'm talking a bit down the road.

Whatever strides he has made are inconsequential when he didn't even make Mesa's roster (he was given the opportunity to stay in the U.S. and got sent back to the Dominican). Encarnacion is repeating the level - the lowest level in the minors - for a 3rd consecutive year and beating up on pitchers 2-4 years younger than him.

So you admit he's beating up on those pitchers, therefore, he's making strides and thus should be considered an up and comer. Case closed.

Just skimming over the 2 DSL rosters, there are several 19-20 year old in their 2nd or 3rd season who havn't improved much at all. There's one such who has 5 HR and a 1.040 OPS in 39 AB, but also has 18 K in those 39 AB. Encarnacion has 8 K and 15 BB in his 43 AB. I just think that it's worth acknowledging the improvements, and wouldn't refer to them as inconsequential.

On a similar note, is there a ballpark figure on the percentage of DSL players who even make it to the next level?
