The pains of playing in Daytona:

Robert Whitenack ‏@whitenack10

Praying to the baseball gods to let me pitch more than 3 innings without a rain delay today!!!!

Seriously though, does it just rain all summer there? I thought it was supposed to just be warm and sunny.

Florida in the summer = practically daily rain storms. They'll last a little while and then it'll be beautiful out.

I'd love to get out of Daytona next time we get a chance.

I've been moaning about this for years.

if by "beautiful" you mean hot and unbearably muggy, then yes.

I'd love to get out of Daytona next time we get a chance.

This offseason.

The Cubs have looked at California, but the California League has its issues too. Meanwhile, Jackie Robinson Stadium is trying to get some renovations going in hopes of keeping the Cubs in Daytona.

Carolina league would be my choice, but I'm not sure if they'll have any openings this season.

However, it sure would be fun to see Baez + Soler in the Cal league next year.

Oh man I'd be pumped if they went to the Carolina League and I got a chance to go to some minors games.

As much as I'd love to see Cubs minor league games here in California, I'd hate to see our pitching prospects even sniff Lancaster on a road trip. I know the Red Sox got the hell out of Lancaster as quickly as possible so I'm sure Theo would prefer Carolina to California.

Yeah, that's why I'd prefer the Carolina league. However, I'd rather have them be subject to the woes of pitching in the Cal league than lose development time due to rain & hurricanes & such in the FSL.

Carolina > Cal > FSL, in my opinion

Probable Starters

Daytona: RHP Robert Whitenack (5.79 ERA, 6.40 FIP, 9.1 IP, 2 K, 2 BB)

Boise: RHP Ian Dickson (2010 at Lafayette College: 7.71 ERA, 23.1 IP, 23 K, 10 BB) - pro debut

What's the story on Dickson? I recall a number of people viewing him pretty positively.

He tore his ACL and missed the 2011 season at Lafayette, so he hasn't pitched in a live game since his sophomore year of college. Cubs drafted him in the 35th round, gave him a $100,000 bonus. He works in the low 90s and didn't seem to get too many strikeouts in ExST.

Tall, lanky guy who tops out in the low 90's with average secondary stuff is what I recall on Dickson right now.

I just don't know if the Cubs have a realistic opening in the Carolina League to go to. That would be the ideal move ... but there's 8 teams, and without looking at the affiliation contracts, 3 of them are definitely unlikely (Frederick, Potomac - due to their proximity to the Orioles and Nationals, despite the fact that Potomac had a disagreement with the Nats last year; and Salem, for obvious reasons).

Then, Winston-Salem has been with the White Sox forever. Not impossible to see a change, but it's at least 15 years, I think, with the White Sox. They were a Cubs affiliate a in the late 80's-early 90's, though. The Wilmington squad has largely been a part of the Royals system, and they seem pleased with it. The Carolina squad is technically the Kinston squad, which has been associated with the Indians a long time.

Realistically, the two potential targets would seem to be Lynchburg, who just switched to Atlanta in 2011, Myrtle Beach, who switched to Texas, but there's a lot of teams that would probably want to go there.

Josh Timmers ‏@Cubsminorswrap

RT @daytonacubs Matt Szczur has been activated from the disabled list. He is expected to be in the lineup sometime in this series

i have just as much of a problem with the hitters who don't have much power and suddenly start hitting 25 home runs in the thin air bandboxes in the cal league. definitely rather have the high-a affiliate in the FSL than in california.

Speaking of Daytona relievers coming on strong, Tony Zych didn't have a bad April, but since then he's been dominant: 20 IP, 17 H, 22/2 K/BB, 7 ER, 0 HR. He's still 21 until August too, a pretty young college draftee.

yeah i'd like to see him brought up to tennessee soon. the word on him when he was drafted was that he could move pretty quickly, and it seems like he's not having much trouble with the FSL.
