i'm not going to act like i know anything about any of these guys, but hard throwing lefties are extremely exciting.

the cubs just fell behind the rockies, so they're back in the #2 spot again

Mike (Orlando): Is Clint Frazier your new #1 for next year's draft?

Jim Callis: No, though he looked good Saturday at Wrigley Field and is as good as any HS player for the 2013 draft. But teams always covet college pitching, and I'd expect Stanford RHP Mark Appel, Arkansas RHP Ryne Stanek and Indiana State LHP Sean Manaea to go ahead of Frazier if the draft were today.

Greg (OH): If the draft was tomorrow who are the 1st prep hitter, pitcher taken?

Jim Callis: Clint Frazier or Austin Meadows for the hitter. There's no clear favorite for the pitcher, but Trey Ball and Kohl Stewart are two of the leading candidates.

Cubs up 2 1/2 games on the Rockies for the 2nd pick. Trail the Astros by 8 1/2. Its far from over, but it's getting more and more likely that the lowest the Cubs will finish is 3rd.

How far behind them is the 4th worst team?

why is it more and more likely that we'll draft after Colorado when we are building a "lead" on them over the past couple weeks?

Astros: 39-85

Cubs: 47-76

Rockies: 49-73

Twins: 51-72

Indians: 54-70

Padres: 56-70

Those are the only teams with 70 or more losses right now. So Twins are 4 back from Cubs.

Yeah, we're definitely getting one of the "big three" college pitchers this year. We might have our pick if Astros go signability again to save more money for rounds 2 and 3.

I don't get the appeal of Appel. if he was so good why didn't someone take him earlier this year. Is next years draft really going to be that shallow at the top?

i believe he's saying that it's getting more likely that, at worst, we finish 3rd. colorado is still close enough to "pass" us, but he doesn't see two teams passing us at this point.

Because he was demanding a [expletive] load of money and the team that took him would have had to commit a large amount of their draft budget to him and they would have had to draft a lot of slot or under slot guys the rest of the draft.

I realize he wasn't worth taking later I mean if he was worth the money someone would have taken him where he would have fit into their budget. He just doesnt seem like a tor type to me.

He was considered the best of a weak draft in 2012 and he's right near the top for a weak 2013 draft.

He was still demanding near #1 pick money and I'm assuming most teams knew that they couldn't get him anywhere near their allocated slot money. But I do agree, despite being the #1 college pitcher last year and close to #1 in the upcoming year, I don't think he ends up as a legit #1 starter in MLB.

I hope that Whitson comes back strong although I have to wonder how high he'd be on our list, because unless I'm mistaken, these guys thought they had a deal with him, then he backed out.

Sorry for any confusion. Probably writing "at least 3rd" would have been clearer.

Now it's a 3 game lead over the Rockies, 3 1/2 over the Twins. Given the proximity of the Twins, there is a fair chance the Cubs could slip to 4th in the end, but with the Shark's innings likely being limited, Garza out, the rookies in and the expanded rosters coming in a little over a week, I'm more hopeful than ever the Cubs could be drafting 2nd next June.

But his demands weren't fitting into people's budgets in the new system.

Appel could easily wind up in the same boat again. Unless things change and a clear cut top guy emerges, why would Houston do anything differently than they just did? I fully expect them to negotiate with 5 guys or so and take the guy who gives them the biggest discount, allowing them to spread the money out over 3 or 4 more guys. And we'll likely have the choice of taking the true top talent or doing the same as Houston.

I'd hope we go the Houston route, take a consensus top 5 guy but know he will sign around slot/below so we can get 2-3 first round talents later. Also at least this year Appel will lose some leverage as he won't be able to play the going back to college card. I would imagine eventually he'd cave, I'd think he'd take less than #1 overall money to start his MLB career in the minors rather than going to an independent league for a year or so and make less guaranteed money up front.

I think that each of Stanek, Maneaea, and Whitson at least have a better chance of increasing their stock than Appel does. If we go pitching in the 1st, I really hope it's one of those guys, because it's much more likely to me we'd be getting a guy with true ace potential, than if we get Appel. And that would trump going the Houston route for me.

True and all those guys are younger than Appel (so maybe have slightly more room to grow/improve than him) and also, conceivably, should have less innings/pitches on their arms.

@keithlaw: Yes, even more so now that I've seen much of the class. RT @bruisergrande: @keithlaw Still consider next year's draft weaker than 2012?

Keith Law posted his top 30 for the draft today. I haven't seen it (Insider) but supposedly 3 of the top 4 prospects are college pitchers. I assume that means his top 4 are some combination of Austin Meadows, Ryne Stanek, Sean Manaea and Mark Appel.

Florida and Arkansas have elite bullpens so Whitson and Stanek rarely threw a lot. Stanford's coach generally doesn't give a crap about pitch counts and their bullpen is much weaker (Appel famously threw 149 pitches in a start last season).

Who knows what Indiana State does with Manaea.
