you can't just look at the numbers in a vacuum for these guys.

I'm looking at levels and age too.

Given that Villanueva is listed as 5'11 160lbs and just turned 21, I don't think that's bad at all at A+. If he can pack on some more pounds, he could profile as a slugging third baseman. Reports are that he's pretty good in the field too.

I'm disappointed only because Buckel or Alfaro were not in the deal. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with these two if in fact these are the guys.

So, I guess the multiple team "threat" wasn't so much a threat as it was reality, if Dodgers, Yanks, D-backs and Rangers were all in on Dempster.

Does Mayo update his top 20 team lists regularly?

I ask because he's already added Vizcaino to his rankings (at #3), but I'm perplexed that Brett Jackson is still his #1 over Baez.

No clue. Honestly, I don't even bother with his stuff, other than some pre-draft things he does.

Until I knew we might have had Delgado, this would have been a perfectly acceptable, even nice, haul for Dempster. Now we got a top-100 (barely) prospect for him and it just feels kind of hollow.

Overall deadline: Solid, acceptable, not quite as amazing as hoped.

This is basically how I feel.

oh look, goldstein loves the deal for the rangers and is re-weeting dumb questions asking if this deal is better than delgado.

scout says christian villanueva, young 3b who went to #cubs in rangers deal is quite good. top 100 prospect in baseball.

This is just a kick in the nuts compared to Delgado. Again, thanks Dempster.

we may have gotten nothing good for maholm/johnson if dempster went to atlanta. it still sucks because delgado is clearly the best of the bunch, but this seems like a decent haul.

I could care less about the pieces maholm/johnson got us, the big catch in this was Delgado. I'm for quality over quanitity.

With pitchers, I think I'd rather have quantity.

You could care less (you mean you couldn't) about what is now our #4 overall prospect and top pitching prospect.

Kyle Hendricks wasn't ranked in the Rangers top 30 this season according to Baseball America, but there is this from the Prospect Handbook...

2011 Draft - Best Pro Debut - (8) RHP Kyle Hendricks used a 90-93 MPH fastball, solid changeup and two breaking balls to strike out 38 and post a 2.02 ERA in 36 IP, including a start at AA

Villanueva is solid. He's definitely inside our top 10, have to research more to figure out where. Hendricks is kind of interesting, I'm sure he'll fit inside our top 30 somewhere. Not bad at all, just a little bit letdown after yesterday and the Delgado saga, no Garza trade.....

We just got over excited from a bunch of last minute talk. Before all of last nights dugout man love, many were beginning to accept that we'd probably send Dempster to the Dodgers at their price and maybe a few PTBNL for guys like Johnson and Camp. We got 2 top 100 prospects and have up 2 guys we pulled off the scrap heap, 1 non tender candidate, and 2 months of Dempster.

You do know that Vizcaino was rated in front of Delgado before this season, right?

He's not anymore. Again, I don't mind these trades and trust Theo and Jed, but I still have a letdown of no Delgado. Plus I'm sure there was another landing spot for Maholm other than Atlanta.

In Christian Villanueva, #Cubs get a slick glove at 3B, with a good stick and some legit pop. Quality kid; quality major league prospect.

If this is the best Theo could get for Dempster after getting the Yankees and Rangers involved, you gotta wonder what kind of garbage the Dodgers were offering.

Also, keep in mind that Myrtle Beach is among the most extreme pitchers parks in the minors. .285 .356 .421 are pretty good numbers considering that. As others have mentioned, he's barely 21 and a string bean who hasn't filled out yet. i think he looks pretty promising.

Given that we've traded 4 players on our 25 man roster in the last 24 hours, should we open a thread about who's coming up to replace them?

Wellington is a no brainer, as is Coleman. Need someone to take Reed's spot (Sappelt?). Are we going with a Garza, Shark, Wood, Coleman, Germano rotation for the rest of the year?

Right, but not because of poor performance or a lessened ceiling on Vizcaino's part.

No, we didn't get 2 Top 100 prospects. We got a couple of A guys, and no high level pitching, which quite frankly is less than we probably should have got. I can promise you that Theo was expecting to get more out of Dempster when this whole process started. Dempster pretty much screwed us royally.

My honest guess is they stuck with Gould and Withrow.

I think old Ned was a bit too smart for his own good. Thought he held all the cards and ended up getting jack as far as pitching is concerned. Note to Ned...you can't win when facing non-Neandertthals in trade negotiations.

I'm really intrigued by Hendricks. If his walk rate is a function of having incredible control, they could really have something with what I understand of his stuff and the results thus far. It could also be a college pitcher pumping the zone with decent stuff that gets shelled at higher levels too, but I'm curious to find out. He seems like a thoughtful kid from the piece BA had about his repertoire(and he's from Dartmouth), so I'm hopeful that he'll be a winner.

Would you take this trade or Gould/Withrow?

Yes, we did.

Vizcaino and Villanueva were both BA top 100
