Again, assuming this is true, it is not only preventing the Cubs from getting a fantastic return but also frustrates any efforts to trade Garza.

Dempster needs to quit being a bitch. This is 2012.

Seriously? Are people really feeling this way? This might be more than just a baseball decision. He has a kid with DeGeorge syndrome. Sure, it sounds like things are positive, but c'mon now. That's a couple months away from his daugther. As much as we talk about things being "just a flight away" these days, it's still painful, for many parents with disabled/sick children, to be so far away from their child on a daily basis.

I think Dempster is enough of a pro to understand the business aspects and eventually approve a trade. I have high doubts that he's trying to force his way to the Dodgers, but that's just my guess based on how open he has been about the destination he's going to. For all we know, it's quite possible that he's just sorting out issues and arrangements.

Edit: I hadn't seen the Rosenthal report when I typed this.

Now i'm almost rooting for him to block the trade so all you [expletive] lose your [expletive]. You're embarrassing.

Well now I'm rooting for him to accept the trade so you have to be annoyed by our celebration.

At least we'll have your superior moral character to guide us should that time come.

I know that nobody wants to be a jerk here, but...

Couldn't Theo say "Hey Dempster, we aren't trading you to the Dodgers, so you have 2 options. 1 Go to Atlanta. 2. Get booed for the rest of the season, and then we will offer you arbitration, where you have the choice of being booed constantly for a year or turning it down and being forced to take a smaller contract than you deserve. Sorry we gave you the chance to do the right thing."

Doesn't Theo have some leverage here?

Agreed, but then why did he give the go ahead to negotiate with the Braves?

Why are people booing him suddenly?

In case you missed it, it's not quite so up in the air anymore.

Sure, he hasn't officially blocked anything yet (as far as we know), but the odds look really, really bad if this reputable reporter is to be believed.

Chicago Cubs right-hander Ryan Dempster does not want to be traded to the Atlanta Braves, according to major-league sources.

At least not right now.

Dempster, as a player with 10 years of major-league service, the last five with the same team, has the right to block a trade to the Braves.

The pitcher instead wants to be sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were unable to reach agreement with the Cubs on a suitable deal, sources said.

I feel blindsided by your tweet yesterday Dempster. I now need 24 hours because of this. It's pretty funny how he's all hurt and bent out of shape because Theo didn't call him into the office first and give him a back rub and tell him how much they're gonna miss him and his impersonations and how hard it's gonna be without him. Theo talked to his ass 2 months ago about this and Dempster even said he'd love to join Atlanta. Man the [expletive] up already. Theo is all business and wants to make the club better and ready to strike deals in a moments notice. He's not Jim Hendry trying to be your best buddy and hold your hand.

You do realize that Dempster has a daughter with DeGeorge syndrome, right? He hasn't given any indication that he's going to turn a trade down. For all we know, he's trying to make sure things are settled for his daughter before he leaves for a couple months. Considering how open he's been about the realities of the business, and open about the destination, when you combine that with the fact that he hasn't given any indication of wariness towards Atlanta ... it might be non-baseball decisions that he's sorting through, for all we know.

If they're trying to get more from the Dodgers as a last gasp type of thing, that's be kind of cool. But, I'd honestly rather have Delgado as a single piece than anything the Dodgers have that's probably being talked about.

Why would the Dodgers give up more now that Dempster is (allegedly) practically insisting on going to the Dodgers?

In a perfect world, Theo and Demp have agreed he'll go to Atlanta already and be on the phone telling LA this is their last chance, to add whatever it is Theo's wanting to the deal. If they don't, then Demp heads to the Braves.

If he's really blocking the trade, then I am disappointed. We're talking 2 1/2 months here. He's a FA after the season if he wants to go to LA or come back to the Cubs he can do so for next season.

Im generally sympathetic to Dempster's situation, UNLESS he previously okayed to Theo that the Braves were a team he would waive 10/5 for. If at the last minute he pulls the rug on parameters he previously provided the Cubs simply because he fell in love with the idea of playing in LA over the last week, no sympathy.

We're not allowed to be pissed when it looks increasingly likely that a very good trade for us is not going to happen because Dempster is not willing to do something he had previously indicated (reportedly, of course) that he would be willing to do?

Is it cool for him to waste the FO's time/energy too?

So much for his I want to help the Cubs get the best possible return for me [expletive].

Yeah, that's kinda insulting assuming Rosenthal's sources are right.

If Rosenthal's sources are correct, this is somewhat disappointing because there's no guarantee that he'll be in the same area next year.

Let's give it some time, though. We live in an age where people expect things to happen right away, but this is a pretty big decision for him. I understand the desire to have your daughter near family, in case something happens, but I have my doubts he's uprooting his family right away, after the trade.

I haven't been legitimately angry at an athlete on one of my teams in a long time...but I kind of am right now.

I'd be disappointed with Dempster if he made this decision solely on wanting to be in LA, because of family being closer, since there's no guarantee that he would be on the same club next year.

That said, it's hard for me to be angry over this. He earned 10/5 rights, and with that, he gets to make a decision on where to go. He's been a good pitcher for us. We need assets back for him to rebuild, so I'd be disappointed, but the rules granted him those rights, so it is what it is.

Let's give him some time to think it over. Atlanta seems "in" on this deal, at least for now.

First of all, it's DiGeorge syndrome. Second of all, what does that have to do with him feeling "blindsided" about being traded to a team that by all reports he included on a list of teams that he'd like to be traded to? If reports were just that he was deciding or sorting through issues, that would be fine, but reports are that he is hurt and feels blindsided.

This is just a negative response to your delayed gratification. People are already super mad that he'd dare take 24 hours to make the decision, regardless of what it is. I'll be annoyed when he blocks the trade, but you guys are freaking out over hypotheticals and/or failing to understand why a human would need 24 hours to decide whether he wants to move across the country to live in shitty Atlanta.

Yeah, I don't care about any of that, I want the 21-year-old No. 3 starter with five years of control and I'm going to be annoyed with him if we don't get it.

Dempster chose a profession where even under the best of circumstances you can be away from your family for extended periods of time. I'm not really seeing how playing a 2 hour plane ride away from Chicago for 10 weeks is OMGZ Teh Biggezt decishuns of hiz lifes!!111
