I never even knew this guy existed until I came home from work and saw his feat on the front page of ESPN.com.

Good for him. Even if he never does anything of note ever again on a baseball field he'll still be remembered forever for what he did today.

David Cone had 2?

I am glad it was on Fox. I watched the last several innings without having to listen to Hawkaroo.

Thank God Hawk wasnt able to annoyingly call the game with his incessant screaming

Armando Gallaraga did too, although the record may not reflect it. Whether it's Sandy Koufax or Dallas Braden, nobody can discount the fact that it's a hell of an achievement.

I hate to say it, but if the Sox rotation of Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Sale and Humber could be one of the better ones in the league. Aside from Konerko, their offense pretty much sucks though. Adam Dunn seems to be looking like the Adam Dunn of old but Pierzynski certainly isn't likely to keep up the >1.100 OPS. They also have a solid pen. If I were the White Sox, I might try all in again. Their long term future is bleak enough at this point that they may as well try an sell off whatever they have left in their farm system to fill some of the offensive holes and go for it the next year or 2. The thing about this season is that there really doesn't seem to be any one team that's head and shoulders above everyone else.

Absolutely. He'll probably take to the talk radio circuit this week to make up for it.

Len Barker, Cy Young, Don Larsen, Mike Witt, Kenny Rogers, Randy Johnson, Roy Halladay, Dallas Braden, Mark Buerhle, Armando Galaraga (he was perfect that day--accept it), Tom Browning, Catfish Hunter, Koufax, David Cone, David Wells, Addie Joss... that's what I can think of off the top of my head.

I know there was a no-name guy in the 20's who did it for the White Sox whose name I can't remember (but I didn't look it up because that would have been cheating). I got 16.

The full list is here. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/history/rare_feats/index.jsp?feature=perfect_game

I missed 2 guys in the 1880's, Jim Bunning, Denny Martinez, and Charlie Robertson was the guy mentioned above.

First of all, does this count since it was against the Mariners? That lineup is pretty brutal.

Second, does anyone get sort of annoyed at how excited people get for no-hitters. Maybe it is just because of the recent string of perfect games in the past few years, but a no-hitter just seems so much less important to me now. Maybe it was just the Edwin Jackson no-hitter. He walked 8 batters, they had an error... I don't know it just didn't seem that impressive to me but the Arizona fans acted like it was awesome. I get why a perfect game is impressive, but if you can walk certain hitters as many times as you want, or even give up runs (and even lose the game) the no-hitter just seems a bit overhyped.

Sort of off-topic, but another thing that annoys me is hitting for the cycle. There are so many combinations of hitting days that are better than hitting for the cycle. It annoys me when people talk about a batter only needing a single for the cycle. "He should stumble around first so that he has to settle for the single." A HR, triple and two doubles is better than a cycle. Pisses me off.

I had no idea Andres Galarraga became a pitcher, probably because he didn't.

Armando Galarraga though, that was really too bad.

OK, that is a little strong. I don't really care. I just don't get why people like the cycle so much.
