What's the argument against giving each manager a challenge per game?

Time, and undermining umpires.

Of course the stupid tradition of managers having to argue calls to no avail takes up a lot more time than any challenge would.

While doing it on a pitch by pitch basis is a whole different thing, I don't understand why they can't have a system similar to the NHL where there's a main office that follows all the games and has access to immediate replay for all plays in the field. If they see a blown call, or even something they want to take a closer look at, just buzz the crew chief and stop play for a minute or two. There's usually about 30-45 seconds between the end of the play and the first pitch of a new at-bat anyways.

I never understood why the NFL doesn't do it like that. The whole charade with the field ref having to go look at that screen on the field just seems like a huge waste of time. Have someone upstairs who's already seen the replay a dozen times by the time the coach challenges make the final decision.

Baseball is dominated by the old guard like no other institution in America, it seems. The argument against replay is so pig-headed and non-sensical, there is really no reason why it should have a voice. And yet, that viewpoint dominates the landscape of baseball.

Lazy, and extreme example - yes, there are people in Chicago who want a return to Jim Crow laws. But, they are old and stupid and everyone agrees that they don't count. Why can't baseball be the same way?

I think it has a lot to do with the way baseball has marketed itself and how the media has portrayed it. The vast majority of everything written about the game is written in a flowy nostalgic style that's almost poetic. It's the myth making of how baseball built America and blah blah blah. They relied on 55 year olds with funny hats to describe the sport to the masses, unlike football which has always (or at least most of the time) been about the present. The 1950/60's Yankees are still one of the the most important teams in baseball, because the past is always so prevalent. When you worship your past over your present you are going to put tradition/nostalgia and everything that goes with it above the needs and desires of the day. Following the steroid scandal they are probably even more hesitant to go modern since so many who pay to watch the game still think Mickey Mantle was the last truly great baseball player.

I realize that this article doesn't apply directly to baseball, but I thought the basic concept is something I'd like to see implemented eventually. Could be used for strikes and balls once the technology progresses to the point of using microsensors.

I might like to see something like that in american football.

There are plenty of tech solutions that could be implemented in baseball but all of them will be met with this nostalgic barrier that jersey is talking about.

is this the same ump? rodney again, this time getting 2 embarrassing calls in the 9th inning of a close game.

Awesome that the player gets suspended for throwing the helmet and the ump gets no consequence for being completely terrible at his job.

There was just a blurb on SportsCenter about this where they said that umpires and executives are upset that Lawrie didn't get more than 4 games. Is there any recourse for the player or the union against the ump that caused the whole situation by being awful at his job?

Microsensors could add so much value to baseball and other sports. It would seriously change the way we watch.

For example, it's sad the NFL is at the front lines of progress with its challenge rules, yet the spotting of a ball is essentially arbitrary and measured literally to the inch.
