From RotoWorld:

Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio confirms that the Reds and Brandon Phillips have agreed on a six-year, $72.5 million extension.

The deal will run through his age-36 season in 2017. Phillips, who turns 31 in June, batted .300/.353/.457 with 18 homers, 82 RBI and 14 stolen bases last season and won his third Gold Glove award for his defense at second base. He was previously due to hit free agency following the 2012 season. It's a little surprising to see the Reds commit this much money to someone who will likely enter his decline phase before long. If it were a larger market team, I wouldn't have a problem, but for the Reds to be tying up this much money in guys who will likely be deep into decline well before their contracts are up isn't wise, imo.

It's good PR and will provide some roster security in for the next few years, but unless they just discovered a gold mine under GABP, it's foolhardy.

I don't think he'd have gotten THAT much on the open market honestly.

I don't think Votto would have gotten 10 years on the open market, either.

The Reds are overpaying where they barely have room to pay market value, and it's going to bite them in the ass.

The Votto signing was excessive, but you could reasonably argue for most of it given how great he's been the last two years and his age and the position he plays. Phillips is good, but he's hardly someone to get nuts over, especially not past 30.

Yeah, Votto's deal is closer to the Pujols type contract - easy to argue it's too much, easy to argue it's deserved and worth it. I'm not sure the Phillips contract is defensible, even if the Reds were a large market team.

They're just in a win now mode. They'll be expensive, but they'll have a nice core of Votto, Phillips, and Bruce for at least the next 5 year. Elite free agents are getting harder to come by these days so a team like the Reds won't be able to outbid the big market guys when they do come along. Works for me. By 2017, The Brewers and Reds cores will be hitting the tail end of their prime, The Astros and Pirates will likely still be the Astros and Pirates, so the divison will come down to the Cubs and Cardinals as the good lord intended.
