Part of me wonders if this means we'll be going very heavily after Cespedes and NOT Soler. Soler is also going to command a major league deal obviously, so I guess it's possible a team doesn't want 2 guys on their 40 man who are really 3-4 years away, in all likelihood. If Soler is signed by us, the 38 other spots will have to be used up very economically. Probably will lose an extra guy in the Rule 5 each year until these guys are ready.

That said, Soler is still the guy I want the most. But I do expect the bidding to get crazy with him for sure.

I look at our 40-man roster, and I see half-a-dozen guys that are barely above roster-fill status. I'm not that worried about hauling two very nice prospects for a few years.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly

Except WSR is the only person Google has as ever suggesting swallowing a cat to catch a dog.

Maybe it was dressed up in women's clothing.

I thought it was the cat to get the dog. It starts with the smallest(fly) and works its way up(horse). Perhaps we should break this intense debate off into it's own thread like the price haggling one.

Think about what you said again.

It starts with the smallest, and then sends in the next biggest to get the previous one.

He was thinking like a Tiger or something

[expletive]. that's right. She did die, so we'll never know her true motivation.

While I might normally agree with that, this being a rebuilding year and several players who still could get moved for top end prospects, that 40 man could get difficult to manage sooner rather than later. Especially if Garza is moved for 3 guys nearly big league ready. At the trade deadline, there are others who might command value.

I'd still like to see them get Soler, however. And Cespedes, actually.

It's sad that we all get excited over this. This off season has sucked pee-pee.

this is basically the best overall offsason the cubs have ever had so far

it is quite risky to have a guy this young need to stick in the majors in 4 years, it almost seems like he's here to get as much early hype as possible and be traded in a couple seasons. If he's not ready by then the team should be poised to contend and I don't see them forcing him into the roster.

7 million bucks for a big market team is never "quite risky"

Lay off the crack pipe. Trust me it's bad.

I mean what the hell did we get except question marks? This off season is a purge a gamble. Nothing more, nothing less.

Which is what we are doing now. I mean what the [expletive]. We are a big market team acting like we are in a small market.

Yeah, we didn't sign so much as a middle reliever to a 3/18 deal. What's wrong with these maniacs?

That's gonna win us a WS.

why sign a promising 19 year old pitcher when that money can be spent on the 2012 equivalent of Jeromy Burnitz?

At best a 4 or 5 starter for 7M. Who is what 3-4 years away? Prior cost less.

Prior cost money and the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. That's a ton more.

I'm still not entirely sure what a "question mark" is supposed to be as a baseball player. Other than some generic term for "Player I'm not excited about."

Right.

and obviously he was worth it. He was major league ready. This guy is projected as crap.

We're a better major league team right now than we were last year. We've improved our system bigtime as well. And we've done it spending a lot less than we did last season. I feel confident we'll sign at least one and maybe both of Cespedes and Soler as well. Kind of an awesome start to Theo's reign, in my opinion.

We'll lose more games than last year.

Obviously the Cubs aren't spending $7 million on a 19-year old if they feel he's a 4 or 5 starter.

Then they are stupid because that's what he'll be.

Yeah, a 19 year old 6'2 lefty who throws low 90's, has 4 pitches, projection left, and was ROY in the main Cuban league as an 18 year old is absolute crap.
