With Angelo I hated the insistence on going after second (or worse) tier veterans for starting gigs. But I like the idea of a veteran to challenge both tackles. The downside is he's almost a lock to start with the competition he'd be going up against.

Don't underestimate how bad Adam Goldberg is. He has started several games the last 3 years at OG, LT and RT....and he's been below average at all of them, including being the 5th worst OG in pass protection in 2010 (when he started all 16 games).

At best, he's the Kevin Shaffer signing redux. I'd rather let J'Marcus Webb play another year and hope again that something clicks and he gets better than to start a 32-year old with no future and a less than mediocre past get meaningful snaps.

General manager Phil Emery has talked at length about what he’s seeking to stock the Chicago Bears roster, and words he has repeated multiple times include sudden, dynamic and playmakers.

If Chandler Jones is anything like his older brother Jon “Bones” Jones, the current UFC light heavyweight champion, he’s definitely sudden and likely dynamic. The Bears will get a closer look Thursday when they host the defensive end from Syracuse on a pre-draft visit, according to an NFL source.

What the hell is a "sudden" playmaker?

Sounds good, in Thierry.

I really don't like Chandler Jones. He looks the part at nearly 6-5, 265lbs with tree limb arms, but I don't think he's very dynamic as a playmaker. Actually, i don't think he's really good football player as of today. He plays high and doesn't use his arms to his advantage. And to me, while he's a good athlete, he doesn't appear to be athletic enough to thrive just based on natural ability while he learns the technical side of the game (ala Jason Pierre-Paul).

Two CBS mocks have the Bears taking DE Upshaw and LB Luke Kuchiely (sp)

With both picks they're passing up Michael Floyd and I just dont see that happening.

I tend to believe the mocks that have Floyd going anywhere between 8-16 in the draft. He's clearly one of the best 2 receivers available on draft day and there are several teams that won't let Floyd get by them if he's still available. If he's still there when the Jets pick at 16, he'll be gone. If he somehow makes it to 19, oh yeah!

Bears agreed to 1-year extension with Briggs.

I wonder if it has a signing bonus or something to get him more money now.

Yes, he'll get more in 2012 and more in total guarantees, in comparison to his old deal.

Per a league source, Briggs’ new deal pays $17.5 million over three years, $5 million of which is fully guaranteed. (As a practical matter, another $3.25 million is guaranteed, given that it’s highly unlikely the Bears will cut him this year.)

In 2012, Briggs gets $3 million to sign, a $3 million base salary, and a $250,000 workout bonus. That gives him $6.25 million; under his prior deal he would have earned $4 million.

Next year, Briggs is due to receive a $1 million roster bonus in June and a $4.5 million base salary, $2 million of which is fully guaranteed. He also is eligible for a $250,000 workout bonus. It’s a payout of $5.75 million. Under the prior deal, he would have earned $6.5 million in non-guaranteed base salary.

Guess he can stop whining on twitter about demanding a trade now and put the focus squarely on drunkenly racing around Chicago's expressways at odd hours of the night.

So Walter Football updated his mock draft... Here are the Bears selections...

http://walterfootball.com/draft2012.php

1- Quinton Coples DE

2- Jayron Hosley CB

3- Juron Criner WR

4- Senio Kelemete OG

5- Deangelo Peterson TE

What do you guys think?

I personally disagree with drafting players that have questioned work ethic and drive. That is the knock on Coples. His talent is there, but his head is not.

You could say that for Peppers/Mario Williams and a few others very good/great DEs in the past whose work ethic and drive were questioned before they got drafted. At 19th pick, you have to take that risk because if he is motivated then he's the next Peppers/Mario or even Calais Campbell.

At the 19th pick, you take Floyd over Coples imo.

Floyd wasn't there in that mock draft so it's a moot point there. That would be VERY tough if both somehow were there at 19. If Emery thinks Bears can motivate Coples without a doubt then he's the pick IMO, but if he had any doubt (no matter how small it is), then Floyd should be the pick. Regardless, that's basically the ideal situation for the Bears in the 1st this year. Bears could also dangle that pick as trade bait and get a package that they can't turn down (like early 2nd/early 3rd this year and 3rd next year or late 1st/late 2nd for example).

I'd take Marvin Jones over Criner. Take Philip Blake over Kelemete. Rather take a project TE like Chase Ford or Adrien Robinson over Peterson (who's a project himself but has less size).

If anyone cares, my GF goes to the Montrose dog beach and sometimes runs into a guy who is really good friends with Eric Steinbach (he often takes his and Eric's dogs to the beach). Today she bumped into him and his wife, and I asked her to find out if there was mutual interest between him and the Bears, and he told her that Seattle and the Bears are the 2 teams that have showed the most interest and those are the 2 teams he has interest in. He's leaning towards Seattle because they are offering more money, and they don't think the Bears will offer more money because (in his words) the Bears are known as a notoriously cheap organization.

He grew up a Bears fan and if all things were the same, he'd prefer to go here, but he's 31 years old and coming off a bad injury so although he thinks he's still at peak performance level, he would prefer to make as much money as he can at this point.

My guess is he'll be signing with Seattle.

I'm ready to actually have the draft, so I'll actually know what the picks are instead of speculating about them.

I'll take Charlie Campbell's latest mock and be done with it. Has us getting Perry, Randle, Dennard, Keenan Robinson, and Matt Reynolds. That would be flat out great.

That would be amazing and I'm not a Reynolds fan.
