So he has yet to coach at Pitt? That school's coaching turnover has been entertaining the past 3 years.

They've had like 6 head coaches alone since Wannstedt.

The Chicago Bears are about midway through their first round of interviews for their vacant general manager position, with Giants college scouting director Marc Ross getting his turn at Halas Hall on Wednesday.

Up next is Bears personnel director Tim Ruskell. He is expected to be given a chance to state his case before team president Ted Phillips and company on Thursday.

On Friday, the Bears will interview Chiefs director of scouting Phil Emery.

Appears unlikely, but if we hire Ruskell I am going to be pissed. Not particularly enamored of Emery either.

Ross is still my fave based on some of the recent impact guys they have drafted, partuclarly in the later rounds (i.e., Ahmad Bradshaw). In general the Giants seem to understand the importance of having game-changing playmakers on both sides of the ball and they aren't afraid to use early picks to get them (Nicks one year, Pierre-Paul the next) even if they already have guys at the position. I like the approach. In spite of all of the injuries they have exprienced on the D-Line, defensive backfield, offensive backfield and at WR, they are often around at this time of year because of the high-quality depth at those positions.

Between Pitt and WVU its less "Backyard Brawl" and more "The Apprentice". The whole Bill Stewart drama was awesomely entertaining.

Is there anyone who won't be, at least a little?

Complete list of Bears FA's: Forte, Idonije, Bell, Jennings, Okoye, McCown, Steltz, Graham, K Davis, Meriweather, Bowman, R Williams, and Hanie.

Free agent Matt Forte hinted Wednesday that he'd at least consider holding out of 2012 training camp if the Bears franchise tagged him and did not make progress toward a long-term extension.

"A lot of teams franchise guys so that they can get a deal done or negotiate a deal," Forte explained. "It just depends on what the motive of that is. ... I wouldn't say holdout, but people probably wouldn't know where I was." Forte was half-joking, saying there's a "pretty good chance" he'll be tagged. The Bears do not even have a GM right now, so no contract progress is being made.

Despite coming off a significant wrist dislocation and fracture, Bears LG Chris Williams is expected to be healthy "well in advance" of training camp.

He's also expected to be penciled in as a starter, with Lance Louis at the other guard, Gabe Carimi and J'Marcus Webb at the tackles, and Roberto Garza at center. Williams, the 14th overall pick in the 2008 draft, was coming on strong as both a pass and run blocker before the wrist injury in mid-November.

On Forte:

Do we have any sense whether his injury might slow him down? I know it's brutal but I would not want to lay out big money for a long time if he's going to lose a step. He's fine the way he was before he got hurt, but IMO Forte is right on the cusp of having just enough speed/moves to be effective. In other words, if he loses just a little bit, I think his ability to make people miss will go away pretty quickly.

From the team's perspective it might be a very good idea to just franchise him, pay him for one season, and see how he is before making any kind of commitment long term.

what was Forte's injury again? I didnt think it was that major that it could effect his play longterm

It was a not-so-serious sprain, I believe.

And whoever signs Forte to a longterm contract is going to regret it. He's got over 2100 touches dating back to college, and he's probably no more than 2 years away from extreme mediocrity.

Posted
A couple of reasons I want Forte to get a longterm deal: 1) he deserves it 2) he's very well liked in the lockerroom and I don't want it becoming a distraction of any kind 3) if you franchise him, it eats up a lot more cap room than if you give him a longterm deal

Exactly. And Ross is their director of college scouting, so the draft should be his strong suit. I did read though that he didn't participate in the 2007 draft since he had just gotten there.

The Giants 1st round picks have all been hits recently, and I like their aggressiveness with drafting in the same ways you noted.

I could see a 4-5 year deal and drafting RB early in 2 years.

cut forte down the road if he begins to tank.

Franchise him first. Talk 4-5 year deal with him. Bears have enough cap space to franchise him and not be hampered by it. But I'd probably look at a RB as early as this year in the middle rounds. If nothing can be worked out with Forte, at least you have a potential replacement in house with a year under his belt. Plus, it also allows them to get rid of Marion Barber.

hub arkush said last night that it will come down to money with philips. but i don't understand that position because if it truly came down to money, then he wouldn't have fired angelo.

i'm really hoping for ross, he looks like a wunderkind.

I don't really care about the notion that he deserves it. It's a salary cap world and teams pay for the mistakes they make in handing out too much money for past performance. I don't care about the supposed lockerroom talk, that's Lovie's area and he handles it well. The Bears have had Briggs, Urlacher, Forte and others talking about holdouts and contracts for the better part of a decade and it's not the distraction people portray it as. And a franchise tag eats up cap space in one year, a longterm extension can easily eat up a lot more dead space in the 2 years it takes you to realize a guy has lost it and then cut him.
