#Padres acquire outfielder Carlos Quentin from #WhiteSox for RHP Simon Castro and LHP Pedro Hernandez

Quentin in Petco...uhhh

My Sox fan buddy was talking about how they were shopping Quentin and thought this would bolster their farm system. I expressed doubt that he had much trade value. He disagreed. I was right.

I like Castro's potential, but yeah this isn't a whole lot for Quentin.

Surely this signals the end of Kyle Blanks' tenure in San Diego

Sox probably could have got more for Quentin but on the same note it doesn't make much sense for the Padres. Quentin is a good hitter but the Padres offense needs a much bigger boost. Besides, Babe Ruth would have trouble OPSing over .800 playing half his games at Petco.

I have no rational for believing this(except for listening to the score) but I have always believed that Quentin would still have a couple of more years like he had in 08. Probably will not in Petco

Quentin is 1 yr from free agency. He's also injury prone and a poor defensive player. It's an ok return but I don't think they could have expected much.

Yeah he had one good year in 2008 and a pretty decent year this past. 4.6 WAR in 2008 and 3.2 WAR in 2011. The rest of his career he's been pretty average to below average. Heard Kevin Goldstein on the score earlier talking about the deal. He was less than impressed with the 'spects coming back to the Sox.

Funny thing was the fan reactions as news was breaking. They were calling for Kenny William's head. Score guys are ripping on him for the "win now" approach, trashing the big league team, the farm, and having nothing to show for it. Sounds familiar.

so because they need a lot of offense they shouldn't try to get any offense. ok.

I actually think it makes some sense for the Padres. They buy low on a guy (Castro having fallen off enough that he wasn't a key prospect for them anymore), hope he has a big year, and spins him off at the trade deadline. I think it's the type of gamble they can afford to make with their 2nd tier prospects.

Sox are getting pretty bashed on this trade, but in general, I think they did alright considering the dynamic - an injury-prone player, 1 year from free agency, not good defensively, and quite streaky. In return, they get a decent system arm in Pedro Hernandez, a guy with borderline back of the rotation potential, and they get a lottery ticket in Simon Castro. Castro's fastball is still there, and his slider still flashes on occasion.

Let's just be honest. Quentin never lived up to expectations and is injury prone. He's also not great in the field. 130 games is his max and he's done it once off the top of my head. He is not a "good hitter" as someone posted earlier. He has had 2 decent years. Sox got what they could for him.

Byrnes made his second bold move in two weeks when he acquired Quentin from the White Sox for two prospects Saturday.

The trade is expected to bolster San Diego's anemic offense. Quentin has four consecutive 20-homer seasons, including 36 in 2008.

"Improving our offense is a priority this offseason and the acquisition of Carlos gives us a proven middle-of-the-order bat," Byrnes said in a statement. "We specifically targeted Carlos because of his production and his hard-nosed style of play."

Thankfully the Cubs got Hoyer, not Byrnes.

I'm somewhat puzzled by this move.

Yeah, the Padres need offense. But this isn't a long-term fix or even a 2-3 year fix. It's a one year rental... for a team that just waved the white flag on next season by trading its best starting pitcher.

I've seen it theorized that the Padres are just hoping he'll rebound and they can flip him for more prospects at the deadline, but that's a pretty risky move even if they didn't give up all that much. Something tells me the intent is to extend him and they didn't want to have to pay FA prices next offseason (if he was even still on the market at that point).

But did they really wave the white flag? I agree that the move sounds odd, but the thing is, The Padres always seem to have pitching but the one thing they've always lacked is offense. Now, they have some good bats in Quentin, Alonzo, Headley, and to a lesser extent Hudson and Maybin and they have a decent trade chip in Rizzo. They also replace Latos with Volquez, who could end up doing wert well at Petco as many so-so pitchers before him have.
