And with Dave Sappelt, theres the fact that we already have him, he's going to be 25 next week bringing him dangerously close to the AAAA label, and he probably wouldn't be any worse than either of the other 2.

Sappelt (or Soriano if Sappelt's the starter) is likely to be the 4th OF. The 5th OF spot would be between Campana and Reed. And if that's the case I'd take Campana over Reed in a heartbeat too.

If we don't trade Soriano or Byrd, We have Soriano LF Byrd CF DeJesus RF. If this were the case, you'd want 1 more lefty be it Campana or LaHair and a righty which could be Sappelt and not worry about signing Reed. If Byrd or Soriano are traded, then there's Byrd/Soriano LF Jackson CF DeJesus RF, in which case we could have 2 righties as the 4th-5th OF. The only thing that I like about the Reed signing is that it could signify one of the 2 being traded and Jackson getting CF for 2012, and if he falls too flat on his face then you can send him to Iowa and put Sappelt in CF, who might not be any better but you're not as worried about the long term effects of hanging him out to dry all season and then call up Campana who I'd assume would be in Iowa to share with him.

Nothing has been made official on this and it has been a week since the "news" came out. Wondering if RJ flunked his physical.

Or there might be a slight chance that he was occupied with other things between the 21st and 28th of December.

What kind of optimistic thinking is that?

The Cubs and Reed Johnson have agreed to terms on a one-year, Major League contract, the team announced. It's a $1.15MM deal, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune (on Twitter). Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first reported the agreement on December 21st (via Twitter).

I already got mad about this two weeks ago. I'm desperately trying not to go through that again.

I said this before, but the only way this makes any sense is if we trade Byrd or Soriano with he other in left and Jackson and DeJesus in CF and RF. Then you have your veteran righty to spell one of the lefties against some of the tougher LHPs and let Sappelt, Camapana, and LaHair battle it out for the 5th OF spot depending on what they want out of it.

I thought Johnson had a very good season except for his annual back flair up.

The results at the plate were pretty good, but almost certainly unsustainable.

Holy crap, he walked 5 times and struck out 63 times in just 266 PA?

I guess they were sustainable. .302/.354/.450 at the break.

This thread is comical in retrospect. I'm not a big Reed Johnson fan. But he's an entirely reasonable 4th/5th outfielder, and amount of OMG THE SKY IS FALLING POSTS because we spent 1.5 million on a competent reserve outfielder was (and is) hilarious.

I think that he was in some respect unappreciated. As a 4th or 5th OF a team could do a lot worse. Problem with the Cubs signing him though is that the 4th or 5th OF was the least of the Cubs problems this year, and unless they can trade him for something useful the $1MM was a waste of money.

You guys may have mocked my plan to quit my job and become a professional roulette player, but I've made a profit *two* days in a row. Once could have been a fluke, but twice? Who's laughing now?

Over his last five seasons (ages 31-35), he's a 2 WAR player per 600 plate appearances.

And he'll keep being one for as long as his .390 BABIP holds out.

You mean the guy whose xBABIP is .371, on the back of a team-high LD%, and a 54% GB%? I just want to make sure we're talking about the same guy. If you actually, ya know, examine the data, there's not much luck involved in his BABIP.

I'm pretty indifferent about Johnson, but he's been a +WAR player for his entire career (though sometimes barely). He's not awful, and he's fine as a spare outfielder (though I'd prefer he was the 5th, not the 4th). His babip is high, but so is his LD%, so he's not just getting insanely lucky. The same was true last year, and was in 2008. His numbers will come down if he continues getting a lot of PT, but that's why he should be a backup.

At best he's a decent backup, at worst he's superfluous.
