If we don't plan on signing Fielder or making any big moves, but want to build for the next 2-4 years,

Alonso gives us our answer at 1B.

Leake is a 24 year old potentially front end starter

As far as I'm concerned, they can keep Heisey who strikes me as a younger Ryan Spillborghs and send us another of their top 10 prospects and I'd be all for it.

We could then maybe turn around and trade Soto and a few smaller pieces to TB for Davis or Niemann.

If you're thinking the Cubs take that to the Reds, I'd hope Jed/Theo think better of it before picking up the phone.

Leake is not a potential front line starter, he is what he is, a decent rotation pitcher hitting arbitration after next season.

Alonso is 25 and sports a career .837 MiLB OPS.

Leake is nowhere close to front line starter and will hit arbitration next year.

Heisey is a 4th OF.

There's no reason for the Cubs to make this deal.

You will notice that Alonzo has been the target of many of my trade proposals. I think he's a younger (and thinner) Fielder. A top ten prospect instead of Heisey would be fine, but I agree with TT that Leake isn't a front end starter but a solid rotation guy for many years. Instead of prospects (from other rumors about a Garza trade), we would be getting at least 2 young players that could help starting next year. Of course, the only down side is that Garza would be in our division.

If we're going to trade Garza, there has to be plenty of high upside in the deal. I like Alonzo and his upside, but with Leake and Heisey there's really not much, if any, upside. If you went with Alonzo/Leake/two high upside, near major league ready prospects then I might get behind the trade. Who/what that would be in the Reds' system, however, I have no idea.

Alonso has no where NEAR Fielder's power. Not even close. And he's a worse 1st baseman as well. To me, he's a top 75ish prospect, who's better suited for the AL. In no way, shape or form should he be the centerpiece of a trade for Garza. Theo's said we need to be overwhelmed in order to move Garza? Well, this ain't it. Not close.

Detroit is who I'd love to trade with for Garza. Turner and either Porcello or maybe Turner and 2 of Oliver/Smyly/Crosby. I want pitching badly in return, if I'm dealing away Garza.

I wouldn't say that's the only downside.

Interesting. Any trade for Garza involving Detroit has to involve Turner but I'm on the fence about Porcello. He throws a lot of innings, decent control but he gets hit a LOT (whip of 1.3, 1.4 and 1.4 over the last 3). He makes his starts and limits the free passes so he seems like he may be a Theo-type pitcher. I would ask for Turner, Porcello and one lesser prospect given Garza is still under team control at a decent salary.

Fielder's career minor league OPS was .921 against Alonso's .837. Fielder was also about 2-3 years younger than Alonso at each level. They're not remotely comparable.

Thought of another fantasy trade. It is also assuming that the Cubs choose not to pursue Fielder, of course. Its probably garbage, but why not:

CUBS TRADE: Garza, Soto

CUBS RECEIVE: Martin Perez, Anthony Rizzo, Chase Headley

RANGERS TRADE: Martin Perez, Mike Olt

RANGERS RECEIVE: Matt Garza

PADRES TRADE: Anthony Rizzo, Chase Headley

PADRES RECEIVE: Mike Olt, Geovany Soto

So for which team is this deal worst?

Don't see the Padres doing that. And I hope the Cubs wouldn't.

To me, the Cubs are giving Soto away for free right there. Add in Neil Ramirez or Cody Buckel and it probably makes it fair.
