said he's going to make it a priority to work with Z

“There’s a reason he has a 125-81 career record,. He’s overpowering at times and he’s a competitor first and foremost. Those are great qualities to have when you’re looking for a front-line starting pitcher. But he lets his emotions get the best of him. That’s what makes him tick, but he has to get those under control a little more. Like a lot of guys with high emotions, he can be his own worst enemy. At times he’s strung too tight.’’

and also

There is still some speculation that former infielder Craig Counsell will also join the Cubs staff if he retires as expected.

i've always had an irrational hatred for that guy

I've always hated Counsell too. But I hope we hire him. Because if someone with that little talent can hang around in the majors as long as he did, he's got to know a hell of a lot. I'll bet he's going to be a damn good coach.

Yeah, if it seems like guys who were mediocre or worse players tend to make good coaches then a guy who had a legendarily bad stretch of baseball might just be a [expletive] genius.

Hell, Neifi might be some kind of coaching mastermind.

I forget who it was, maybe Len or Bob said it's because those are the guys who spend most of the game on the bench chatting with the coaches and managers and get a better feel for the decision making aspects of the game rather than those who are actually good at it.

It makes sense, in the same way a studious but moderately talented musician or artist most often makes a better teacher than a gifted prodigy.

I'm like 70% sure you're being sincere here, so I'm going to tentatively disagree.

I think Counsell benefited from playing in an era that over-valued grit and grass stains and his prodigious lack of talent was over-looked. He also played under some impressively pathetic managers who enabled his slappy bat, poor baserunning and noodle arm to stay in baseball eons longer than he deserved.

I think it's that, and nothing more.

I think, if nothing else, that Counsell has to have a pretty good grasp on the moving pieces of a hitter's swing; because with that monstrosity of a stance he certainly didn't just blindly follow some coach's suggestion.

His brother Terry is an amazing drummer...

I thought about making that reference but I didn't think anyone would get it.

I was hoping somebody would get it... Though I believe the spelling of the last name is different.

It is Bozzio, but I wasn't going to split hairs.

Thoughts on the actual hire(Bosio). Good, bad, indifferent?

I don't know how he is as far as mechanics or teaching new pitches, but for the one year he was in TB, Victor Zambrano and Geremi Gonzalez never matched their effectiveness or IP after that '03 season.

I guess you can say lightening didn't strike twice for them....

Too soon.
