BA really loves the Cubs system huh. 14th pre-trades? Wow.

I always thought I disagreed with Callis, for some reason, but boy, everything he says falls in line with how I feel about some of the new acquisitions. Intriguing guys, but it sometimes feels like a lot of people are buying the new acquisitions more because they are TheoJed's acq's.

Is there anywhere I can find a depth chart for our prospects?

AZ Phil is a very respected writer at TCR, which I frequent. I had been trying to put all the prospects where different prospect lists were calling for them, but then I found out how many players there are in the system and how little I knew about some of them.

Just one man's take on the system

14 was a bit of a surprise for me as well. I figured us in the 18-22 range but was preparing myself to see 25 or so.

Also kinda surprised to see Baez at #31. I mean, I knew he was between #28 and #42, but I definitely figured on the back end of that. He didn't get a chance to do much of anything during the season... I imagine his placement next year will be more telling.

I had looked over Sickels' lists, didn't use his rankings, but had us at 17th after the Rizzo deal. I figured a Garza deal would get us to 12th.

And what does that get you? The Mets released Fernando Martinez today and he along with Lastings Millege and Carlos Gomez was supposed to be the greatest outfield in the history of baseball (oops). These prospect lists are given WAY too much credit than they deserve.

A little overstated but yeah overall these lists are just fodder. It's more fun than not sometimes.

The rankings also had the Rays and Rangers as two of the best teams a couple of years ago. Obviously it meant nothing.

Well, it gives you a much better chance to have a couple of guys giving you excellent production at a very cheap salary. It also gives you a much better ability to go out and trade for young, established guys who can give you the same thing. Of course not every guy on a top 100 list is going to pan out. Far from it. But, they have a much better chance than guys who aren't on them. Prospects are the best currency a team has. Aand the more good ones you have, the more flexibility you have to make bigtime moves as well.

Well... It eventually got the Mets Ryan Chruch/Brian Schneider and Johan Santana from 2 of those 3 guys in trades. I say that wasn't too shabby.

martinez was handled stupidly and already has a fucked up knee. prospect lists are obviously imperfect, but they're generally pretty good at predicting future success. to write them off as nearly worthless is quite foolish.

and the Royals too. Thanks for helping me make my point.

You're new and you're saying dumb things with arrogance. I like you.

According to the free agency thread, FMart is going to be claimed first by the Astros. I'm not all that interested in him taking up a spot on the 40, anyway.

A little overstated? That's quite kind.

The same Royals who are probably a year away from being a playoff team?

Prospect lists are better than watching actual baseball. i challenge someone to disagree with me.

Cardinals fans disagree with you. But that's because theyre [expletive].

Certainly following the minors will be better than watching baseball next year.

I'm still trying to figure out how Dolis, who's never really been anything special in the minors seems to have made every top 10 list for the past few years yet Beliveau doesn't even register despite the fact that he's had great numbers at every stop he's made. They're both the same age and Beliveau's a lefty, which tends to give guys a leg up.
