Name a guy on that list that you would have sworn had already retired.

I'll go first: Jason Kendall

Ramon Ortiz.

Miguel Batista

I think this speaks more to the fact I need to get a life more than anything, but I could probably name 99%+ of the rosters of each MLB team off the top of my head. Therefore, I am not surprised to see anyone's name.

That said, I always feel like Darren Oliver should be retired when I see his name, though he's still fairly good (but not when he really needs to be... :x ).

OK, Rain Man.

Like I said, it's probably just because I eat and breathe baseball from April-October, not because I'm an idiot savant.

I'm kinda surprised most people can't, given that most of us play fantasy baseball and at least glance over all these names more than a few times a year.

What kind of fantasy leagues do you play in? 60 team leagues? Fantasy pool isnt that deep. Besides looking over the roster hardly means committing every name to memory. Taking the bare minimum of the 25 men on a roster at any given time, you will fail to name 8 off the top of your head.

sign Papelbon to be a starter

you have to figure he's going to max out at about $11M AAV in this closer-rich FA market. could he be bought out of closing (3 years, $47M)?

I like the concept of converting the guy, but you'd have to figure 2012 would be an experimental year, limiting his innings and potentially piggybacking him with other pitchers. You'd be spending a lot of money on that experiment. He's only gone past 50 pitches three times in his career. What could you really expect out of him, 25 starts for 100 innings?

Guys might prefer to be starters, but if you can make big time money as a reliever and have been a successful reliever for many years, I'm not sure there's enough incentive to take the risk.

i'm not so sure about that; Texas has done a great job of this recently, with Ogando jumping from 41 to 169 IP and Wilson jumping from 73 to 204 with no ill effects - the conventional wisdom that pitchers need to be gradually eased into the role of a full-time starter seems to be becoming outdated

The Red Sox actually went into spring training one year intending to convert Papelbon from closer to a starter. He decided he preferred closing. That killed the experiment pretty quickly.

I don't know that I could do the 25 man from each team, but I could probably name 25 players in each system (including majors).

i'm aware of that, but you have to wonder if a significant raise would change his mind, or maybe he's soured on closing some after having just put the final nail in his team's playoff chances this season

Didn't he tweak something minor, like what Cashner just got over, that put the brakes on the experiment? I could have sworn it was a minor injury that would have delayed him getting innings in that killed it.
