My only problem is that the Raiders paid a good price on someone they arguably could have bought low on...Otherwise I think this is a really smart move for them. They're not in the Luck hunt this year, and after Luck (and maybe Barkley) the college QB situation over the next couple of years is pretty crappy. They get a former elite QB talent who is now an angry vet with the proverbial chip on his shoulder...Keep in mind that the last QB to do anything significant with the Raiders was a 34+ year old retread....and that this is a team that was surprising people with Jason Campbell at QB.

Well, you're ignoring Landry Jones this year and Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray next year.

Whether or not Palmer was elite a few years ago matters not now. The Raiders aren't getting Palmer from his heyday and even if they captured lightning in a bottle with him, they significantly overpaid.

Jason Campbell in 09 (Age 28): 86.4 QBRat, 64.5 Comp%, 20 TD, 15 INT

Carson Palmer in 10 (Age 31): 82.4 QBRat, 61.8 Comp%, 26 TD, 20 INT

Jason Campbell was worth a future 4th rounder.

Carson Palmer was somehow worth a 1st and 2nd (maybe two firsts).

2009 being Campbell's best/most productive season by far and first above average one. I say this as someone who actually likes Jason Campbell...

And Carson Palmer hasn't had an above average season since 2007. He's not even worth one first round pick, let alone a first and a second and potentially two firsts if the Raiders somehow manage to win a playoff game this year. Even if the Raiders do manage to make the playoffs this year, it will be a terrible trade because of how much they gave up.

It's possible for a quarterback to play well enough to justify giving up that much. Now Palmer probably won't but it's not like there isn't a certain threshold that exists where it would've been worth it.

Meh on the other two also. I know other QB prospects exist....it's just that they suck.

Whether Palmer was elite a few years ago does matter...many consider his last season terrible mainly because of who he was, since the raw numbers are not as bad as painted...So relative to elite Palmer he sucks...relative to most NFL QBs young and old he isnt a bad guy to go after...I'd personally bet on him being throwing up a good season over hoping some kid named Tyler gets drafted and doesn't suck.

If the Raiders were surprisng people with Jason Campbell at QB I think Palmer might have a shot. No reason Palmer can't be a Kerry Collins type except that he's a better QB than Collins, who did alright for himself as an old retread type.

I've been saying this for a while, but I would gladly take RG3 in the NFL.

Throw some weight on him and I like him alot. Still not a QB I would fall over myself to draft...there's one of those in the college game right now and he's not going to be a Raider.

I never said there wasn't a threshold where it would be worth it. If Palmer plays amazing and the Raiders win the Super Bowl, then the trade looks great.

But that's the same thing as saying if Soriano comes close to replicating his 2006 season on average over the entirety of his contract, that the $136M will be worth it. Yes it's possible. But that doesn't mean it's very likely.

We could get into a long, tiresome discussion about why that Soriano analogy isn't the same thing but let's not.

I was thinking more along the lines of if Palmer gives you 75% of what Rich Gannon did then you're probably at least breaking even on the trade.

He's listed at 220. Not sure if its accurate, but for 6'2" given his athleticism that's plenty of weight.

Yes, if Carson Palmer goes back to his 05-07 form, it might be close to breaking even. But I don't think that's very likely.

they should've traded for dan marino instead cause man just think if he reverts to form it's totally worth like four 1st rounders

That's really not what needs to happen though. There's 10 other players on the field, and the Raiders have alot of interesting young talent on offense to work with.

He could be better than Collins. I was speaking more of him becoming the veteran, retread QB who does really well for a team in his 30's. Both have the similarities of being big armed, immobile, and disappointing very highly drafted QBs.

In this sport the QB position is too vital to not go balls out on getting one. Since they're not getting Luck, better find another route to get a solid starter who can facilitate/execute the offense Jackson wants to run out there. Palmer does that and has some success then he'll get at least some of his old rep back...Given his pedigree I think there's the outside shot he takes the opportunity and runs with it.

BTW: I take back knocking Aaron Murray a little. I do like him as a QB prospect. Still wouldn't draft him in the first round, but he's got the ceiling of a 2nd round pick, though I guess someone could Ponder him. Didn't someone out there compare him to a young Brees at some point?

Sunday is a huge game for the Titans. If we have designs on the division, we need to knock off Houston (likely without Andre Johnson) at home. I like our chances as I think we'll hold down the running game, but it's so hard to know what to expect from this team week to week.

Apparently Hue Jackson called the Palmer deal "the greatest trade in football."

I'd say it barely edged out Ditka trading for Ricky Williams.

Apparently Al Davis's spirit is controlling Hue Jackson.

Jones is going to kill it in NFL. At least I hope that's what he thinks and gets his ass out of Norman after this season.
