Houston Hombres

In the early/mid 2000s I thought they should have been named the Houston Honkys.

yeah they did have a ton of white starters back then: Bags, Bigs, Ensberg, Ausmus, Everett, Kent, Berkman, Oswalt, Clemens, Pettitte, Wade Miller, Lidge

I'm pretty sure at one point during that time they didn't have a black guy on their 25 man roster.

It's pretty alarming how the percentage of black players in the majors has dropped over the last 25 years or so.

i vaguely remember Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson or someone pointing that out.

that may be, i know that the issue was about baseball in general, but it was particularly egregious that this or that baseball team had no black players

Did they mention how worried they were about the NBA having small amounts of white people?

last year my sons traveling baseball team played an all African American team. These kids were extremely athletic and kept the game close because every now and then one of them could tomahawk a HR. As the game progressed they just didn't have actual baseball skills. They were terrible defensively, most of them had lousy swings and as a whole they had no baseball sense. I was talking with one of the coaches afterwards and he told me that they can never practice. Most of the kids who are really talented play in basketball leagues during the summer also and would quit baseball in a heartbeat to play basketball. So the opportunity to practice baseball is almost non-existent. The coach said it is kind of sad because none of them will ever get anywhere playing basketball. He understood that there is a lot more opportunity for these kids to get somewhere playing baseball in either college or some level of pro. A couple of those kids probably could do that, but they will never put in enough work in baseball to get that far.

Love RBI. I started last year asst. coaching a Jr. RBI team (8-12 yo) in Jackson. We had several teams that played all summer and it was really a lot of fun to see them come along with each practice. With RBI, there is only a $10 entrance fee to play the summer and even that can be waived. Also, if a child doesn't have equipment but wants to play then obviously we get him some gear via donations or some of the funds that RBI has. The Sr. RBI (13-18) was really competitive and there were some great ballplayers with a ton of potential among those guys. Several of them ended up getting scholarships to JUCO's and some other local schools. We selected a team of 15 from the Sr. league to go play at a regional that was in Little Rock last year. We placed second behind a team from Houston. Also, we are having an MLB Scout Day tomorrow which should be fun.

No, because nobody is worried about that.

Why? What's the difference?

Because other than a few outliers like Steve Nash, watching white people play basketball is boring.

Oh so just because you're racist you're ok with it? Ok.

that all sounds great...i'm really excited to help out in any way possible...if i can get an asst coaching position, that'd be ideal...anyway, thanks for your input on the matter.

Kind of an interesting topic to me. Maybe not to anyone else, but I'd like to see a debate on this. Get to it, guys.

Oh, and is the general consensus that the reason there are so few African-American baseball players is because the equipment is so expensive and they have poor playing conditions on their fields? Or because, on average, these boys grow up enjoying basketball far more than baseball? If it's the latter, why is it an issue?
