Just asked John Henry if Theo deal was close to being done. "No, not close," he responded.

Sox GM (to be) Ben Cherington said reports of a deal between Sox and Cubs on Epstein are "premature. Haven't heard anything this morning."

Hoyer's departure feels like a 20-something Wall Street punk jumping jobs for $. Jed your time here was short yet undistinguished.

When I saw the 200 million thing from Levine posted on here, I figure it's just a misquote. If not, having a 170 mill major league payroll with 30 mill going towards the draft and IFA's would be totally incomparable as to how bad ass that"d be. Like I said, I figure it's just a misprint.

Yeah, it was supposed to say 300 million.

Maybe best to start reading before you post "news."

Padres general manager Jed Hoyer will go to Chicago to become Theo Epstein's top executive there once Epstein's trade to the Cubs is finalized, sources said.

Hoyer will become the Cubs GM, with Padres VP Josh Byrnes being elevated to replace Hoyer as GM in San Diego, a possibility first reported by SI.com on Tuesday.

Epstein is expected to be named president once he is officially a Cub. There are hints the Red Sox and Cubs are making progress in compensation talks, but people familiar with the talks say no trade is finalized yet. CSN Chicago reported a deal would likely be consummated today with an announcement likely tomorrow. Epstein's Cubs deal is worth $18.5 million over five years.

Hoyer has always been close to Epstein, and while some may be surprised he'd move to take a lateral job, he goes to a team in a bigger market with bigger expectations. Hoyer and Epstein teamed up to win two World Series titles in Boston. Byrnes, who also had a hand in those championships, was previously GM of the Diamondbacks. He will once again be a GM for owner Jeff Moorad, only this time in San Diego.

Some NSBBer is going to see 15 extra pages in this discussion and think 'ok what kind of dumb off tangent thing did they decide to talk about all morning' and then click on the thread and be shocked to see a bunch of news.

Rosenthal:

Padres assistant general manager Jason McLeod also would join Epstein and Hoyer with Cubs, sources said. The Padres would receive no compensation, and like it.

Maybe I added the "and like it" part, but the rest is true.

Unfortunately this mug craps on the parade:

A top Red Sox official just relayed word that reports of an imminent resolution to the Theo Epstein compensation talks with the Cubs are false.

“There seems to be a fundamental divide in the way the two clubs look at this,” said the source. That means the Red Sox are still not satisfied with the quality and/or quantity of Cubs minor leaguers Chicago wants to send their way in return for installing Epstein to the top post, probably president of baseball operations, while he still has a year remaining on his Red Sox GM contract.

The source said that there has not been progress recently in the talks and that a resolution is not expected anytime soon.

I can see the way Boston is going to play this: "We didn't like the compensation being offered, but the Cubs called in the Commissioner and he made us take what they were offering. We're not happy about it, but we're left no other choice at this point."

Which hopefully means we're screwing them and they're trying to save face after getting Flaherty and Gaub or something.

This is worse than when I was in eight grade and trying to get to second base with my girlfriend.

I figured that Cherington and Henry were just blowing smoke to try to defuse things until a PC tomorrow, but that last article is a bit more harsh with the whole "fundamental divide" bit.
