Rogers article speculating on what happens if deal falls through http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-your-morning-phil-theo-bud-albert-20111018,0,4479202.story

That said, would it be the worst thing if Epstein was blocked from joining the Cubs for a year? He and his lieutenants, like Byrnes (or maybe Hoyer), would have time to study the organization from top to bottom and plan how to strike in a major way in 2013 and beyond.

Go to work, earn money, spend time with family or girlfriend, and stop this insanity.

This is worse than the daily knee-jerk minor league reports and who is and isn't a prospect.

They are all prospects, and Theo Epstein is NO GUARANTEE of the coveted, and meaningless Title!!

And nobody here except the idiots think Theo is a guaranteed title. But Theo is a HUGE upgrade over our previous general manager and the Cubs finally look like they're headed in the right direction so this is something to get excited about. Stop being a buzzkill.

Anyone know anything about the hiring process that resulted in (I presume) Andy MacPhail hiring Ed Lynch and how it all played out?

Good, a little BearClaw is just what we need to bring sanity to this thread.

So they are working for free then? Some of those guys will require compensation too.

I think it's the dismissive tone mixed with wrongness that make it so great.

Why don't you enlighten me instead of attack me?

Attack you? Ha. You don't think your tone was dismissive and your post wrong?

Kyle, et al explained it as well as it could be explained. You either get it by now or not.

Just reading this guys stupid articles and then seeing his dumb face smiling on the side of it makes me really angry and want to kick him in the teeth

Then don't read them, it's for the best.

Didn't he say hiring Theo was stupid like 2 hours ago?

It's sad when at least half of the people on this site are smarter than and write better than paid journalists.

I have to believe Rosenbloom is playing the role of a journalistic heel and sensationalist. He's just awful at even that.

Of course he could just be that bad.

Roto

The Red Sox and Cubs remain at stalemate on compensation negotiations for general manager Theo Epstein.

An announcement, reportedly, wouldn't come until Friday at the earliest, but only then with the permission of baseball commissioner Bud Selig. Epstein will apparently be able to bring one prominent member of Boston's front office to Chicago. That could be Jonathan Gilula, who is the executive vice president of business affairs. Trainer Mike Reinold might also move with Epstein, according to ESPN Boston's report. Epstein might only take the role of president of the Cubs and hire a general manager. If so, three former aides now in San Diego would be in consideration: GM Jed Hoyer, VP/baseball operations Josh Byrnes, and VP/assistant GM, player development and scouting Jason McLeod. Byrnes was the general manager of the Diamondbacks for more than four seasons.

Friedman + McNutt + $millions >> Theo

That I cannot disagree with at all... Friedman is actually my first choice. I'm just buying into the argument he is not a viable option, and that things are too far gone WRT Theo. We're gonna end up giving more than many here want, methinks.

Until he gives me reason to believe otherwise, I'm going to give Ricketts the benefit of the doubt. I'm expecting good things from his negotiating ability.

Oh I believe in Ricketts too. Problem is, it might wind up he's dealing w/ an intransigent trading partner. With the craziness coming out of Bean Town these days, I would hold nothing past them. I trust Ricketts to not allow them to hold Theo for ransom, but even he can't force them to be "reasonable" (however one defines that in terms of proper compensation). Thus my belief if this gets done, it'll be w/ the Cubs giving more than many here feel comfortable with.

Anyone else hear the Jed Hoyer possibility? Thoughts?

Think he's the back-up option if the Theo talks break off. Or maybe if Theo becomes president, we insert him as GM and have a double-headed monster.

Garza fits nicely into the top half of any rotation but even with his 3.32 ERA and 10 victories last year the Cubs lost 91 games.

GREAT POINT LET'S CUT THE WHOLE TEAM AND SIGN SOME PROVEN WINNERS (i.e. people who have never played on a team with a losing record at any point in their careers)

I can imagine the Red Sox are absolutely shocked the Cubs let it get this far. The Red Sox have to move on too, Theo nor Cherington can interview managers with this looming. Red Sox are going to cave and we should throw Ricketts a parade.
