Holy hell this thread is hot garbage.

I have no idea what the Tapatalk crap is, but I hate it more every time I see it. Make it stop!

It's an app for smart phones that makes it way easier to browse/post on message boards.

From what I understand, it's awesome.

Not sure why every post needs to be tagged, though.

Another thing about Hoyer, won't the Padres be looking for compensation as well since his contract doesn't expire for awhile. So we'd have to go through this same process again for a guy who aren't even using as our general manager. I just don't see it happening. The only way Hoyer comes here is if the Theo talks fall through. Then Hoyer becomes our general manager.

GJ repeating what I just said while replying to you/quoting you.

Ya see? How are you supposed to commit this to memory??

It is awesome. EJ could turn off the signature feature.

Some would have you believe that he'd rather work under his buddy Theo (who knows, he could be Gar Foreman to Theo's John Paxson here - which would suck because I want Theo to be handing the GM stuff) than be a GM in San Diego.

I think that's exactly what this is, and I too would be disapointed if Theo was the out of public eye president and Hoyer was the GM. Then again, apparently the best part of Theo is his ability to build a strong baseball organization and farm system and his worst quality is his ability to make successful FA signings. Hiring Hoyer as GM to target and negotiate FAs might be beneficial even if Theo surely has tons of influence on the decisions. Even if that's true, there has to be some level of independence built into the position for Hoyer to leave his position controlling the SD franchise and move to Chicago to work under Theo.

So.....is he coming or not? This is getting ridiculous.

It's not as ridiculous as you're making it seem because there hasn't been that much question about whether he's coming or not. He's coming.

It is a bit ridiculous that it's taking Boston this long to allow this to become official, though.

Would make no sense to pay Theo 15-20M to not make those decisions.

Very possible that this is for leverage or Plan B but also that he'd be GM and Theo would be President (Andy / Ed).

NO one and I mean NO one has said the Red Sox should not seek compensation. The problem is that they are seeking RIDICULOUS compensation (Garza for sure and possibly Castro) for a guy that they really do not want anymore (despite what they may say).

Henry recently indirectly threw Epstein under the bus by saying he did not want the Crawford deal from the get go. The Cubs (by all accounts) have offered to pay huge money for the last year of Theo's contract, which, in itself, is ample compensation. They have also offered some sort of minor league players as well.

And this for a guy that Hendry indicated is burned out and the shelf life for his spot has run it's course. So, yea, they are out of line here.

Henry actually questioned his sanity... I'm guessing that was a figure of speech but it wasn't the kind of thing that he would have done of there was a chance in hell of the Rox bringing Theo back.

The more of Theo's guys the better. He'll be trying to change a culture. You don't change a culture with just one guy. Adding Theo and some of his guys would be expensive. However, if successful, it would pay dividends in the mid to long-term.

I'd be glad to have as many of his guys as he wants. I'm just saying even if Theo were president and Hoyer were GM (which I'm still hoping is not the case - I want Theo to be the GM), Theo would still be making the decisions on big signings.

If these latest reports are true this is like "We're getting the band together again." They're "On a mission from God"--bringing a World Series to Chicago. Blues Brothers Accent>

Regardless of possibility, would you guys rather have Hoyer or Byrnes?

Both (for different gigs) but that isn't going to happen. GM--Hoyer.

He is making those most important decisions. He's just giving Hoyer leiway to make decisions under the scope of what Theo's plan is.

I dunno, its the only quasi-logical reason I can think that Hoyer wants to give up his control of a major league baseball team to take a less important role under Theo. He could be making more money, but I can't see it being significant enough for him to leave his current position.

Theo would be influencing most signings. As President of Baseball Operations he wouldn't be worried about Wrigley, the City crap, the Triangle Building, etc. He would oversee changes on the field, changes in player development, changes in scouting, changes in medical rehab and injury prevention, etc. That is TOO much to expect from a GM.

You really can't see any reason why Hoyer would want to leave the Padres to join the Cubs and his old buddy?

Option A: Have full control over a major league franchise in San Diego

Option B: Do all the dirty work for Theo as he makes decisions and I execute them

It's a clear step back in his career. Maybe his motivations are different than most people, but most people in the baseball world would kill for the opportunity to run their own baseball opps department for an MLB team.

Through no fault of your own, really, you're wayyyyy behind in the discussion making these types of points. Get with it. We're arguing about much more important crap now.

I just don't buy that any talks re: Hoyer are to bring him here with Theo.

We're having enough trouble as it is getting compensation lined up for one guy. We're gonna look for an active GM to make a lateral move or take a demotion to work under Theo?

Would you guys or would you not agree that this "promotion" wouldn't be clear cut in nature in the way that assitant GM to GM would be?

There is a HUGE assumption here that Theo will not bring in a GM.

It was a sort of smart ass way of me telling you we went over stuff like that back in August.
