apparently nobody in phoenix has a real problem with the hit

Coyotes GM Don Maloney also chafed at the criticism Torres has received.

"You would think Raffi murdered a busload of children the way he's portrayed here in Chicago," Maloney told the Arizona Republic. "To me, it was part of a hockey play, and I'm not defending it. Obviously an offense occurred, but it was not a situation where he took his stick and hit someone in the head. Probably two hundredths of a second it went from being a regular hit to being a little late hit."

"I've seen a lot of other hits like it around the league; it's a fast game," Tippett said. "The thing about TV is you can slow it down and you can click it and click it and click it, but when you're out there on the ice it's not slowed down and click, click, click, it's a fast game.

"I don't think there was a malicious intent on Raffi's part. He's a hard hitter, that's the way he plays the game and he turned coming full speed, caught a guy right in the chest, and unfortunately the player was injured. I don't think there was a malicious intent like you see some of the crosschecks to the face or you saw [Keith's] elbow a few weeks ago on Sedin, there was no malicious intent like that."

Tippett must not know the difference between chest and chin. Right in the chest. Wow.

The worst part is that these are all de facto employees of the league saying this [expletive].

I love these kinds of comments. Here's a long diatribe defense of the hit..............but I'm not defending it.

Yah OK.

It's dumb to even talk about it being a "little late". That isn't even the major issue with the hit, though it was late obviously, it's that he left his feet and targeted the head. Their coach is just blindly defending his player but, Jesus, he clearly didn't hit him in the chest.

It was .8 seconds after Hossa had the puck. .5 is what's supposed to be accepted as not late. .3 is an eternity in hockey.

As someone once said "It's a fast game".

I guess they have to defend their player but Raffi Torres isn't exactly Mother Theresa out there. Why not just say, "he was trying to make a play and got there late." That satisfies the 'don't hang him out to dry' element but still acknowledges the dangerous and reckless nature of the hit.

My theory: because they told Raffi to do it. They aren't going to admit anything.

I don't doubt that, to some degree. They probably didn't tell him to go get himself suspended for 10 games (or, ahem, get a $2500 fine), but I'd believe he was told to target 81, 10 or 19. From Phoenix's perspective, this is all nothing but a huge win. Bollig needs to kneecap Doan and Whitney in one shift.

I don't want Crawford to do it because I'll bet he's not much with his fists, but I'd like Emery to kick Mike Smith's ass.

It was a hockey play. I'm not defending it. Something bad happened. But something worse could have happened.

Someone should tell him not to talk.

The beat guys are suggesting that Morrison might be in for Mayers tonight as a healthy scratch.

Jesus.

Edited to note the healthy scratch. WTF Q?

And to think we have to go through this against a phantom team that shouldn't even exist. At least with the Canucks it's against a real franchise that exists because people care about the sport. Phoenix never cared about hockey, that team should be somewhere else. Hockey players shouldn't have the option of suntanning during the season dammit.

Frolik is flying again. Everyone is right now.

Yep. Good start for the Hawks. Hopefully they can finally capitalize on a power play.

And the refs missed an obvious high stick.

I don't like Bollig fighting there. Especially if he's gonna get his ass kicked.
