Who all do you think/want to be called up in September? I gotta think Brett Jackson will be called up and I hope they find a way to play him everyday. Although I don't trust Quade to play him in favor of Johnson, Byrd or Soriano everyday. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

Some combination of:

Brett Jackson

Lou Montanez

Wellington Castillo

Brian LaHair

Scott Maine

Justin Berg(if off DL)

Chrs Carpenter(if off DL)

D.J. LeMahieu

John Gaub

Brad Snyder

Ryan Flaherty

Marwin Gonzalez

Jay Jackson

I highly doubt that they call up more than 5-6 guys, so my moneys on LaHair, Jackson, Montanez, Castillo, LaMahieu, and Maine, and again, Berg and Carpenter if they're healthy.

I'll be somewhat surprised if Johnson hasn't been moved by the deadline.

While that's a more desirable list than mine, don't they usually favor guys who are already on the 40 man, which is why I chose Montanez and Maine? Also, they've already said that there's a good chance that LaHair gets a call up as a reward for his season, although I think that might have been Hendry who said it.

Flaherty isn't on the 40 man yet? I guess he can stay down. Parker I don't care enough either way. LaHair can buy a ticket to see Wrigley if he likes.

I really would like to see them do away with Lopez and give Jay Jackson a few big league starts despite his dreadful season. Keep in mind, he's Rule 5 eligible in the offseason, so they'll have to either put him on the 40 man or risk losing him, and I think somebody would pluck him and if nothing else, stash him at the end of their bullpen.

Won't Flaherty have to be rostered anyway? What's the difference if he's rostered now or in December?

Wouldn't it be the difference of an option year? Probably not a big deal considering his age, but if he winds up a utility guy, then the flexibility may matter.

No option year difference. Options are only used when you get sent to the minors and that wouldn't happen for Flaherty until next year spring training.

If we just wait to call up Jackson next year, does that mean we get an extra cheaper year out of him? Or does that not apply since it's just a September call up?

I think LaHair, Montanez, Castillo, and LeMahieu will also get called up, but probably wont get much playing time. I would rather see Gaub get called up over Maine. And there's no reason to waste a call-up on Berg.

I want to say September call-ups don't count with regards to that, but it shouldn't matter, as only the 16% with the most service time between 2-3 years get early arbitration.

You're right. September call ups don't count toward ML service time.

I think I remember an article a few weeks ago with a Quade quote basically saying not to expect Brett getting a callup.

You also mentioned Snyder, though, and he isn't on the 40-man. He was outrighted earlier this year after his call-up.

If they call up Flaherty they will have to add them to the 40 man either now or in December. Jackson would cost them a 40 mam spot though, since he doesn't have to be protected this offseason.

Yeah - it really doesn't make sense to bring up Jackson for a month and then lose the flexibility on the 40 man roster.

Doubtful Brett Jackson comes up. Remember, too, the Cubs have to add Cashner to the 40-man when he comes off the DL, and they also must add LaHair, whom they've indicated will come up.

While you're here, is their any indication that anyone will be moved by the waiver deadline?

In addition to Pena and Johnson, Grabow and DeWitt are both quite expendable. Will anyone want them? That's another question.

There does not appear to be any deals imminent.

That's too bad. We could use some extra roster spots so we csn see some guys like Jackson and Flaherty who actually have a future with the team as opposed to guys like LaHair, Montanez, and Berg.

i'd almost just leave lahair in iowa so that he can try to win the pcl mvp. the i-cubs suck but lahair has put up some monstrous counting stats and could lead the league in hr and rbi while hitting well over .300. he's kind of on the japan track, and if a pcl mvp could help him make some pretty good coin over there, then just let him do that rather than have him get 20 ABs as pinch hitter or spot starter for pena.

Iowa's season ends 9/5.

huh, for some reason i thought that AAA leagues went longer into september.

then yeah, just call him up after iowa's season ends and let him fart around wrigley for a few weeks.
