According to Phil Rogers (I know) on Chicago Tribune Live, the Cubs are considering a claim for Gavin Floyd. Not exactly Cy Young, but reasonably young and under team control for a few more years.

Floyd has put up a nice whip (1.19) and a good HR/9 (0.9), in particular considering his home park. $7 million in 2012 and a $9.5 million team option in 2013 aren't that bad. We do need (at least) 2 starting pitchers. Depends upon what we would have to give up; I doubt the sox would let him go too cheaply.

Looking at his numbers he's interesting. I think his numbers would improve with the league switch for sure. Like it has been said it would depend on what it would cost us to get him.

Rogers hinted that the WS have some serious trimming to do on payroll for next year. Apparently they don't have any SP prospects that are anywhere near ready, so I would assume pitching prospects would need to be included.

We arent exactly rolling in quality pitching prospects and if we were we probably wouldnt need Gavin.

4.6 WAR in 2009 and 4.3 WAR in 2010 (according to Fangraphs) and a 2.8 WAR so far this year. His FIP and xFIP have been in the mid-3s each of the past two seasons as well. Solid numbers for a 28 year old pitcher.

If we're deadset on dumping Z, Floyd would make for a really nice replacement. The real question is how much would it take to get him? I wonder if we could build some kind of deal around a guy like Nick Struck or someone like that (a guy with some upside at a high level but still with some question marks)?

Why not make a claim? If we did one of threw things will happen: we work out a trade for him, we don't work out a trade for him or they give him to us. No downside to that. Unless, do you lose you waiver priority if you make a claim?

I'd be really happy if we acquired him at a reasonable cost. Id be surprised if Bush was allowed to give up too much.

That would be pretty awesome, but I don't think they'd send him our way for a reasonable price. They also waived John Danks, who I'd prefer, but he's only under team control through '13.

Yeah, Danks would cost more. Multiple teams were asking about Danks at the trade deadline.

I was just thinking about SP that would fit the Garza mold for this offseason(still under team control, becoming too expensive for their team, not an albatross contract, etc), and Danks and Floyd were definitely two of the better options. Making a deal for someone like Danks or Floyd or Nolasco or Billingsley, maybe trading Ramirez and then adding our favorite combo of Pujols/Fielder + Wilson could make this team real good in a hurry.

Nolasco seems like one of those guys for whom a change of scenery could be HUGE. Given his propensity to have that "one big inning" it would seem something gets mechanically off that his pitching coaches haven't been able to pick up on. Or he could just be a headcase, who knows?

Nolasco's game log is truly strange. He has 3 or 4 starts where he gives up 0,1 or 2 runs, then out of no where comes these 4IP 11ER games. He's been following a very similar pattern all year.

He's a glorified Randy Wells. I mean really how much better can the scene for a pitcher get than a cavernous ballpark for a home park? If we were to target a NL East headcase pitching in a big park I'd look at Mike Pelfrey. He's been a productive pitcher for a while now, but I'm still seeing a guy who is still figuring it out mechanically and stuff wise. He hasn't been hurt, he remains athletic, he's been productive, he's got stuff...All traits I'd look for. I think he's a pitcher who could age well and really take a step forward in his late 20's/early30's.

That said, neither actually interests me too much, and I guess I'll throw Billingsley in there. I'm looking at aces and psuedo aces (CJ Wilson, Trevor Cahill, Ricky Romero), big upside troubled youngsters (B. Anderson, Rick Porcello, Kyle Drabek, Brett Cecil, Chris Tillman, Ross Detweiler), and young power arms who rack up K's (Gio Gonzalez, Brandon Morrow). I don't know why I threw in Blue Jays pitchers either, since it's unlikely any would actually be available except in something spectacular.

A solid pitcher like Floyd works too, definitely. He's not an ace, but there's worse guys to throw out there in a game 3. Another guy like that is Ervin Santana, who might be on the way out in Anaheim as he's a FA next year with Haren, who is the better pitcher and more likely they one they keep. Can't ignore that they have two really intriguing arms coming up in Chatwood and Richards too.

Hopefully the new GM and/or manager can find a pitching coach to bring over. Riggins hasn't done anything to impress me.
