I've said this in every thread in which Penas future comes up: If the Cubs plan to build a winning team for 2012, we need an upgrade, and 1B is a big place for it, be it Fielder, Pujols, or someone else better than Carlos Pena. If They plan on a rebuild for the future, there's no reason to be paying Carlos Pena another 10+ mil, and I'd assume he should be looking at a 2-3 year deal, likely a 2 year with some kind of option.

If we're still on the hook for the deferred payment either way, I just assume keep him.

Minus whale. For all intensive purposes, we wouldn't be saving any money.

Intents and purposes.

Seriously?

Wow's the first time I've ever noticed that one. I'm embarrassed. Not as embarrassed as weis will be soon though.

It's taken you four months to recognize how often you embarrass yourself?

I'm on a roll apparently. I'm blaming it on the blood loss I just endured.

Keeping him around could be viewed as a ploy to strengthen the Cubs' hand when dealing with Pujols/Fielder's agents. Something along the lines of "we're happy with Carlos if you're not happy with our offer." A very weak ploy considering the players and the likely interested teams involved, but a ploy nonetheless. It just may outweigh any potential gain we would garner from dealing him if salary relief is not an option. While not definitively, trading him before the end of the season essentially states that they're not interested in him next year and are moving in another direction. A bit silly, I know, but it all adds up, and I certainly don't mind if the Cubs become a bit more Machiavellian and use every possible angle to their advantage.

This thread is a great example of the disaster that NSBB has become.

Aren't you one of the guys that ruins all the game threads?

What? No. Fielder and Pujols are going to ultimately get their money from somebody, and whether or not we hang onto Carlos Pena isn't going to change that. Keep in mind, the GM who would even make such a play hasn't even been interviewed yet.

Its the [expletive] Yankees. Let them have him. What are they going to do with him? Who the hell knows, but let them have him. So he literally made it all the way to the end of the waiver wire.

Wouldn't the ploy work just as well if we traded Pena?

That's so crazy it just might work.

Depending on when the claim went through, he got past either every other team, or every other team except for the Red Sox.

So if 2 teams are tied both make a claim, who wins?

Not surprising there would be such limited interest in an underproductive 1B.

Pena claimed, but #Cubs likely to pull him back. Need 1B for 2012, want to keep options open. Did not get good offers before 7/31. #MLB

This makes sense to me. The Cubs don't need an Aaron Baker type prospect. It's very easy to survive without one really.

Cashman saying deal not likely. Everyone can breathe easy again. Carlos will ride it out in blue for the remainder of the season.

Carrie Muskat of MLB.com writes that Cubs first baseman Carlos Pena is "not going anywhere."

Pena was claimed off waivers by the Yankees on Wednesday, but the Cubs refused to trade the slugger at last month's non-waiver deadline and don't seem inclined to part with him here in August. The reasons: half of Pena's $10 million salary for this season has been deferred to 2012, and the Cubs are still hoping to re-sign him as a free agent this winter. Pena, 33, has 23 homers and 67 RBI through 124 games with Chicago.

Even thinking about Pena next year [expletive] sucks. I don't care about all his supposed leadership abilities or sparkling defense, he's nothing special and certainly not worth eight figures.

If they're planning on this guy being back, we're obviously punting 2012 so I'd as soon trade for one of KC's glut of corner IF/OF types to try out for a year while we wait for Votto.

Obviously. I even stated it was silly. I don't actually believe it would have much effect at all on the negotiations. All I'm saying is that no matter how small the advantage, it's important to use every angle possible to gain leverage. It isn't much if anything, but it may be a sign the Cubs are attempting to operate with a bit more cunning and intelligence than they had in the Hendry Era of blatant transparency.

it's going to big our big free agent deal of the offseason. Ladies and gentleman I give you the Cubs 1st baseman for 2012 Carlos Pena!

Keeping him signifies that we are content with him manning first base. Trading him signifies that we are wishing to head in a different direction. As I said, it's a weak ploy, but if it is indeed part of their reasoning I'm glad to know the Cubs are using their heads and considering even the smallest of angles. As trite and hackneyed the saying, everything counts.

If our new GMs 1st order of business is to give Carlos Pena a 3 year extension, I hate him already. I have no faith in a team with Carlos Pena unless he's batting 5th behind a legit major league 3-5 hitters unless we can somehow manage to sign CJ Wilson and trade for Felix Hernandez.
