I think we can all agree that only white players are ever called gritty but Cubs fans have hated them some white players too. Or have we already forgotten about Aaron Miles? I can't think of his name but he was a switch hitting 2nd/ 3rd baseman that struck out a lot and went on to do well a couple seasons with the Red Sox. He had one of the better obp % on the team but Dusty refused to have him lead off.

Also, anyone from the Cubs.com days should remember the vitriol that was (rightfully) thrown at Todd Hundley. Compared to Hundley, Milton Bradley's Cubs career was a love fest.

Here's the thing about Miles, though...if he had been the Miles of '04-'08, tons of Cubs fans would have loved him, or at least tolerated him. You're right, people are going to hate a crappy player. regardless of skin color...but mediocrity goes a long way to inexplicably justifying a white player in too many fans' eyes.

Mediocrity plus affordability. Most of the biggest hatred goes to mediocre or worse players that account for a significant portion of the payroll.

ok, so because a white player has been booed, that means the slurs shouted at black and latino players is the same thing?

the booing of a white player is in no way shape or form proof that racism doesn't exist.

True, though personally I think even then many mediocre white players often get more leeway before they're looked at as "too expensive" or as a waste of money as opposed to many non-white players. Say you have two players with rather generic personalities making $5 million; I'd think that if they put up similar mediocre numbers the white player would likely be cut more slack with certain fans and members of the media than the non-white player.

Note that this isn't any kind of statement of fact; it's simply a belief of mine.

And you're wrong, Dusty did bat Bellhorn leadoff. Once. Because some guy he was fishing with told him he batted leadoff the year before.

hahahhahahahahhaa it's so hard to believe this was true but it more or less was

And the fact that racists shout slurs at black and latino players doesn't mean all people yelling at them are motivated by racial reasons.

The main reason anybody yells at an athlete is the irrational fanaticism they have about the team they support, and the responsibility they place on those athletes to deliver results.

I was going to point out Cedeno in 2006 and Theriot in 2007, but when I looked at their numbers, they weren't a close as I had thought. Granted Theriot wasn't good that season, but he was still much better than Cedeno was the year before.

Yeah, it looks like a bad joke, but it was all too true.

If that weren't true, it would be a Giles Bros or erik joke.

The sad thing is that Bellhorn was one of the team's best OBP guys. Actually he had a small window where he was a pretty useful player. Gave the Cubs a 4 WAR season in 2002...

I wasn't around in 2003, but I recall seeing an image of a Bellhorn Mobile? Was it a station wagon with a bunch of antlers and horns on it? Or am I imagining things?

That exists. I don't have it, but I know it exists.

And racial epithets are ready-made labels conveniently called upon in the heat of the moment. There are no equivalents WRT Caucasians, IMO. This is in no way meant to excuse the use of slurs. And if it matters, I'm not white.

As long as were bringing up stupid Dusty quotes, this has to be one of my faves:

"He's going to find that hole between third and short and up the middle, and that famous Juan Pierre flair is coming right around the corner," manager Dusty Baker said.

"I've never heard that before; that's the first time," Pierre said. "What was he talking about?"

Awful as he is, Dusty's been the most amusingly quotable character in baseball for years.

Amusing as in hahahahhaa what a moron

I never found him to be amusing.

Neither do I. A manager pointing out that the Yankees don't take walks while they were leading the league in walks doesn't amuse me when he's managing the Cubs.
