"I am here to talk about the direction of the Chicago Cubs franchise. The ballpark for our short season A affiliate in Boise sucks. We're gonna move the team to Coeur d'Alene. Oh and look at how well we are playing with everyone healthy. Told ya so. We'll keep our roster as is this offseason. I'm off to Egypt guys, peace!"

And we shall provide the bathroom troughs with fresh urinal mints.

This talk of making Hendry a scouting guy is ridiculous. I think Hendry would just walk. If we're gonna keep Hendry but get him out as GM, there is only one way, and its up.

It would be like if Ryno had stayed on and become bench coach.

I think everyone is staying. I think we're going to hear some awful stuff about the team having come together and starting to play up to its capability now that people are back from injuries, we're going to hear about how great the draft was (and it was), and that it's going to be Hendry/Quade for 2012.

Actually, Ryno as bench coach made sense, and so does Hendry as scout. Olders GMs move into scouting all the time. He's not an up and comer who has been earning promotions. He's been in his position for a decade, he's older, has had health problems and is under contract. If he wants the money he is owed, he will stay on in whatever capacity they want him. Nobody is going to be banging down his down to lead their team.

It might make sense to you or us, but it sure as heck didn't make sense for Ryno who wanted no part of it. And I don't think Hendry would want any part of a Cubs scouting staff that he's not in charge of. Maybe in another organization.

The really telling part for me is that Ricketts is being shown around with Hendry's right hand man Flieta. He's not going to shake his hand at the end of the tour and say "hey, thanks and nice job but we're going in another direction." If Flieta stays, and I think he's one of the ones that's clearly shown he should be rooted out, then Hendry isn't going anywhere.

I may be reading into things here, but that's what I'm seeing.

I don't think that part about the money is true. The Cubs can try to reassign him, but Hendry is within his rights to say no and collect his paycheck instead. The contract he signed almost certainly comes with the title of GM and the club would be breaking the contract if the tried to make him something else.

The contract says he has to be the GM? It probably doesn't allow for him to get demoted, but I'm sure the contract isn't voided if the Cubs "promote" him. It doesn't seem like it would be difficult for the Cubs to spin a a new title for him as a promotion. Like jersey said, its not like he has another GM job waiting for him as soon as he leaves the Cubs. While he wouldnt be happy about being moved to another position, it would make sense for him to accept the move and jump ship if that opportunity ever comes up again. Or he could say 'screw the Cubs' and look for a similar position (as the one the cubs try to offer him) on a different club. But the chances of him making the same amount of money the Cubs are playing him for a lesser role is slim to none.

Edit: Of course this is all based on the premise that the cubs are really planning on doing something like this, which I don't believe is likely.

By all accounts, he's well-liked and respected in the baseball community. He won't have a GM job waiting for him, but it's very possible he could have some type of senior consultant position.

It probably isn't voided with a promotion, but Hendry likely has the right to refuse any promotion as well without penalty. But you're right, it's not likely that the Cubs would ever go down that road.

Who else besides the director of the farm system is going to give the owner a tour of all the farm teams?

Well, hopefully nobody and he'll be fired within 10 days. But I have a feeling the owner of the team could find someone if he really wanted.

I wonder how many other MLB teams call press conferences mid season to talk about the direction of the franchise.

Just another pathetic sign of a pathetic organiztion.

Probably a lot of them if they have something they want to speak to the fans about. I'd rather them do this then keep us fans in the dark.

I agree. This is the anti-safari.

well hopefully the fact that he just toured the minor league affiliates, including the short season clubs, puts to bed the ridiculous idea that they don't care about winning.

(or maybe he just didn't feel like going on another safari)

I guess the good thing about it is that (maybe) they recognize there is some misconception regarding the direction of the franchise :)

Maybe they are listening to the fans.

This just doesn't strike me as a good thing.

I still have a sneaking suspician that Hendry is gone. I dont put stock in what Nightengale says and several local media people have speculated he could be gone. That being said the Cubs fan in me is expecting the worst.

Or, Ricketts is doing the MBWA thing. What better way to evaluate Flieta?

This whole thing is kinda bizarre. I'm just trying to envision what it is they can announce/discuss in 10 days, that they can't talk about right now.

It's not like a firing fits into that mold. Or a hiring either.

he's going to announce that jim hendry will be back next year to put to rest any speculation of him being fired. we all know it's coming.

I could also see Hendry being elevated to team president. We all want to see him go but lets face it Hendry is probably here to stay for at least a year if not more. I will be very surprised, and elated, if hendry is indeed fired.
