According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Nationals may be willing to part with closer Drew Storen in order to acquire outfielder Denard Span from the Twins.

The Twins seem to overvalue late-innings relievers, especially those from the Nationals' system, but it may take more than Storen to get a deal done for the young and productive Span. Storen, 23, has a 2.37 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 49 1/3 innings this season. Span has been on the disabled list for a while with a concussion, but is a .289 career hitter, plays quality defense in center field and remains under team control through at least 2014 at

This seems slightly ridiculous. Storen is an incredible young talent who will probably be more difficult to replace in terms of quality and value and they're supposedly willing to give him up for Span who, while a solid player, is probably much easier to find a replacement for?

Are the Nats really that desperate for a CF'er that they're willing to move one of the best young pitchers in the game for him? I know he's a reliever and they're volatile, but Storen isn't just some flash in the pan guy who came out of nowhere.

Pitch them on Byrd. He's injured too, and far more productive than Span when healthy.

Also, how is Span considered the better player in this write up?

Drew Storen is 24 and has spent his entire career as a reliever, yet the only time his K rate has been good for a reliever is in 21 IP at AA. Getting 3 arbitration years of a 3-4 WAR CF production for him is hardly a losing proposition.

I understand Span has good value, I'm just of the opinion that you don't trade away a guy who was a 10th overall pick and became your closer 1 1/2 years into his professional career and hasn't made you regret making that choice one bit.

He's 23, btw. Turns 24 next month

Right, he's 24 in two weeks. His draft position doesn't really mean anything to me. The trade would add value, and they certainly wouldn't be able to get Span for most/all of the players drafted in his vicinity.

Storen was a major budget pick. The Nats had the 10th overall pick that year because they failed to sign Aaron Crow the previous year, meaning that pick was unprotected. Adding onto things, Storen was taken the same year they took Strasburg, meaning the Nationals had to save money with their later picks.

Storen's a good player, but don't be swayed by where he was picked.

I'm not sure calling Byrd "far more productive" than Span is correct, either.

Eh, I was in meathead mode. I was drunk and did hasty generalizations without looking up statistics (Yes, drunk at 5:15PM on a Wednesday... don't ask questions)

After a reassessment, you (and the others) are correct, though Byrd's OPS is slightly better than Span's, but not by much, and Span's defense makes him more valuable than Byrd.

I still wouldn't trade Storen for him though, but that's just my personal opinion.
