I'll only jump on it if the Cubs can trade some of the garbage for some of the good Pirate players like in the early 2000s.

I'd much rather the Pirates win than the Cards, Reds or Brewers. However, I think their pitching has been performing way above their heads and will come crashing back to reality soon.

Just doesn't look right

Oh how I would love to not watch an Indians/Pirates World Series. I think that Game 7 would lose to Alf reruns on TV Land in the ratings.

I have a feeling I'll regret cheering for the Pirates in like 2-3 years.

Why? They're not any good now, their farm system is in the bottom 3rd of baseball and their ownership doesn't spend money. Good for them that somehow Maholm and Karstens have insanely outpitched their peripherals, but it's not going to hold up.

I still think people like Alvarez and Tabata will develop into much better players than they are now. Also with fans starting to come back it's likely they can at least get their payroll into the $60 mil range. But you are right that their pitching has carried them and has been really lucky but I don't think they are going to just drop back to 95 loss awful rans after this ends.

I just love myopic opinions like this.

Alright, let's just say that the Pirates have a whole lot more in common with the 2003 Royals than they do with with the recent Rays, Reds, Brewers, etc.

Because their offense right now is McCutchen, Walker, and an island of misfit toys. That could improve with trades/FA and Alvarez getting better, but it's a far cry from the Reds having Phillips, Bruce, Votto, and Stubbs to build around or the Rays having Crawford, Longoria, Zobrist, and Upton, or the Brewers having Fielder, Braun, Weeks, and Hart. On the pitching side, they simply aren't set up for long term success without an infusion of talent. Maholm, Karstens, Correia, Morton, they've done an admirable job this year, but not one of them can be counted on to approach this season's production going forward, based on both their history as players and their middling peripherals. They are dead last in the NL by a sizable margin in strikeouts, at near the bottom in K/BB. It's not to say that it can't happen, Huntington appears to be a bright guy, and this year's success and attendance could embolden ownership to raise the payroll. But they're several pieces from being a repeated playoff contender as it stands right now.
