Does this mean they're moving Axford to setup man? Seems a little odd to go after a high profile closer when you already have a fairly productive closer. If you need middle relief help, why not target middle relief? They're cheaper and already suited for the role you need.

K-Rod will be their setup man. His vesting option for next year is for $17.5 mil and kicks in at 55 games finished, so the Brewers won't want to be on the hook for that and is the reason the Mets wanted to deal him. Seeing as they got cash in the deal, it's not an awful trade for the Brewers, depending on the players they gave up.

Considering the Mets are throwing in cash, i can only imagine what this does to the Brewers already dried up farm system. If the Brewers cant win it all in the next year or 2, Melvin could end up looking as bad as Hendry. Granted he hasn't thrown the cash around, but hes depleted what was once a very good farm system down to nothing.

I am rooting pretty hard for the Brewers right now.
GO BUCS!!!

Agreed. Pirates all the way.

Either works for me. Just so long as it's not the Cardinals.

+1....Any team in the league not named the Cardinals

I have to root for anyone over the Brewers, and heres why. As a lifelong Cubs fan, Cardinal hate has been implanted in me. However, Ive never really known any Cardinal fans to reenforce that hate. Brewer fans, however, thats an entirely different story. Going to school for 5 years in Wisconsin, I know plenty of them, and everytime that a Wisconson team beats a Chicago team, they think they just won the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Championship, whatever. I know it all stems from Milwaukees massive inferiority complex toward Chicago, but still. After the Packers winning the Super Bowl, theres no way I could stand the Brewers winning the World Series, and yes, I know, Green Bay isnt any closer to MIlwaukee than Chicago is, but to them it may as well be a 15 minute bike ride. Therefore, I have to push for the Cardinals to take the division, and hopefully be promptly wiped out by the Phillies, Braves, or Giants. Granted, Id prefer the Reds or Pirates over the Cards, but realistically speaking, I cant see either of them pulling it off.

This beaing said, if the Cards really are interested in moving Rasmus, they could probably get Heath Bell and any Padres starter they want. Maybe not Latos.

Actually the magic number is 54. The option also kicks in if K-Rod closes 100 games between 2010 and 2011. He finished 46 games in 2010. He only needs 20 more to get to that 100. So this really hurts my fantasy team to lose one of its closer....

Yeah, I live in downtown Milwaukee. The problem is that things are just so insular here. If you wear team apparel for anyone but a Wisconsin team you get stares and insults. I've had people slow down to yell f*ck Purdue as they drive by me when I'm wearing Purdue gear.

It's really strange because the people up here are generally nice.

I doubt the Brewers gave up all that much to get an overpaid closer that they can't actually use to close games (due to the vesting clause).

This seems mostly about the Mets starting the moving-on/shedding payroll process.

In all fairness, you'd get that in a lot of places.

I never did when I lived in Chicago...

He sure as hell would in Iowa. There's a reason the B1G protected that rivalry. [expletive] is serious.

Try wearing Cubs gear in St Louis. I guess the difference is they dont care about the other sports. Illini gear is well received, for instance.

Chicagoans don't generally care about college sports.

Word.

Honestly, there's really only one team that I would have cared less about in regards to football, and that's Indiana. I would have loved anyone else in that division, Wisky most of all.

We must've never crossed paths.

I'd bet Illinois has the largest alumni base in St. Louis.
