Other than Parker who are some of the D'Backs better pitching prospects? If any? Bobby Borchering is also intriguing as a power hitting corner infielder. He's only 20, has a nearly .800 OPS and 18 HR in A+ this year.

D-Backs are in the middle of a pennant race and are getting little to no production out of first base. They could overpay for someone like Pena who is a notoriously better 2nd half hitter. And hitting in that ballpark Pena could put up much better power numbers than he has hitting for the Cubs so far this season. I don't think it's out of line to think that they wouldn't at least discuss the option of trading one of those guys for him

I would assume Baker would get most of the starts. If they want to hold on to him I'm sure they'd like to see if he can improve his hitting against RH pitchers (doubtful).

in what's already a lost season, might as well give LaHair one last shot, and see if he can remotely approach his .277/.345/.519 MLE (unlikely) and maybe carve out a role as a bench player somewhere

man, i do wish we had tried to sell high on Colvin last year

If they had to trade one of their best prospects for a mediocre (and possibly expensive) rent-a-player, my guess is that they'd rather just bring up Goldschmidt. I think the best we can hope for is a package similar to what we got for Derrek Lee last year.

I wonder if that would be a good opportunity to take a look at how Castillo's bat plays at this level, with either Soto or him playing 1B.

I would love to see Castillo get a bunch of MLB AB's this year.

Cubs first baseman Carlos Pena "will almost surely be moved," tweets SI's Jon Heyman. Heyman adds that the Diamondbacks "could be in play there."

I wonder where he is getting that information since indications lately out of most of the local sources are that the Cubs may be looking to hold on to Pena to hedge their bet against not being able to sign Fielder or Pujols.

I don't get how keeping or trading Pena this year increases or decreases his chances of staying here next year?? Or how keeping him this year is a "hedging" of their bet in case they can't sign Pujols/Fielder. He's going to be a FA anyways at the end of the year. I think there is just as good a chance that Pena is a Cub next year if he is traded or stays the rest of the year in Chicago. Unless he has explicitly stated he doesn't want to be traded and Hendry and co. go against his wishes and trade him and it pisses him off so much he won't consider returning here in the offseason.

Perhaps they just leaked that stuff to do everything possible to increase his trade value. They don't have much leverage, so why not act like you aren't 100 percent committed to trading him?

Olney mentioned the Yankees as a possible destination on "Mike and Mike" this morning.

Sickels' Top 20 in Review

They have a few intriguing high levels LHPs in Wade Miley and Pat Corbin and two projectable young RHPs in Robbie Rowland and JR Bradley. If we're lucky, the Cubs might get one of each for Pena.

How common is it for a player to be traded in the last year (last few months) of his contract only to re-sign the following season with the team that traded him?

Who would they target in return? Brandon Allen? Bobby Borchering? Paul Goldschmidt?

Is Jarrod Parker aiming too high?

parker is aiming way, way too high. actually any of those names would be kind of a miracle for a 2-month rental of pena.

Hardly big names, but mid-2000s Sidney Ponson and Geoff Blum come to mind.
