The day before going to the shooting range, I mention to Scott that I want to explore his relationship with the Dominican Republic-born Pie, because it's a part of his life that few outside the clubhouse seem to know about.

He smiles.

"Felix is my friend," he says. "I give him a hard time. The reason why I give him a hard time is because there are certain people you deal with and you go up and talk to them, and it doesn't work. They don't understand.

"I tell him about some of the ways he's acted: 'Look, you're acting like an animal, you're acting like a savage.'"

Scott turns to his locker and pulls out a bag of plantain chips.

"So I throw bananas in his helmet. Here are my banana chips to remind him that whenever he acts like an animal, 'Hey, that's what other people are thinking. They're just not telling you, but that's what they're thinking about. And I'm telling you so that you're aware of that so you can make a cognitive decision to not behave like that.' I would want someone to tell me that instead of letting you making a jerk of yourself."

basically every thought that enters Luke Scott's head is completely [expletive]. He is a birther, after all.

Useful hitter or no, he's talking himself right out of the league.

I don't see why that would be the case considering his teammates, manager, and front office like him.

I've heard Jones defend him, but Scott won't be an Oriole forever. His continued BS could easily be construed as racism, and right or wrong, he needs to realize spouting this nonsense will define his career more than anything he does on the field.

He was loved in Houston too. It's not like he's Chad Curtis or even Ryan Church.

I really don't think he cares how his career is defined.

it will probably be defined by what he says because he's not a good enough player to define it with his play. he's a fairly generic DH/corner OF on a bad team; those types of guys don't make a name for themselves by hitting .275 with 25 home runs every year.

It's something that could give potential future employers pause; that's why I said he won't be an Oriole forever.

If he's talented and doesn't bother anyone, his future employers won't care that he's a gun-toting birther.

Carl Everett played til he was 35 and he sucked his last 3 years in the majors.

I would challenge anyone to have a look at this clip and then say Scott might not have a valid point regarding the savage comment.

If Felix Pie was white and did the same thing, you think Scott would say he was acting like a savage?

Hey, let's not skip the the Joe Morgan level racism here. What about Asians and their calm, calculated approach to going crazy?

Would Davearm?

It's a toss up as to what was more savage there, his unforgiveable blackness or his terrifying Hispanic-ness. If only he was a short white player instead.

His birther schtick is more Everett-esque, just another couple of ignorant athletes. These recent comments have an undercurrent of racial superiority to them, or at least seem that way.

Luke Scott cheerfully calling someone a savage is one of the more infuriating things I've pictured lately.

Hey look, Davearm's wrong again!

He didn't call him a savage. He said he's acting like a savage. There's a difference FYI.

And it's hard to dispute, looking at the behavior. Straight out of the Milton Bradley archives.

Nah, it's really easy to dispute since players put on that kind of show all the time. You really think Pie was going to start pounding on the ump if he was let go?

And yeah, a whackjob Birther "only" saying he's LIKE a savage and throwing banana chips at him is totally, totally different than calling him a savage.

If only people said someone was "acting like a [expletive]" instead of straight up calling them one! So many innocent misunderstanding could be avoided!

I think we all watch plenty of baseball here. That kind of "show" absolutely does not happen all of the time.

Pretty much every season.

I'll ask again: do you think Pie would have attacked the umpire if he wasn't being held back? Please. As soon as his coach puts his hands on him he starts playing it up because he knew he fucked up and just lost the game for his team. It's juvenile and a pretty ridiculous attempt at deflecting attention from how he just lost the game, but he wasn't going to do anything except throw a tantrum and get in the ump's face.

Pretty much every season.

So one major leaguer, out of ~1000, in one game out of ~2500, acts like that.

Finally we agree.
