If you haven't seen the link, it says Minnesota, Texas, NYM and Nationals could/should be a few games better (about 4-6 each), while the Cubs stay the same.

ZiPS must not have thought much of Cashner/Wells/Garza if they expected them to put a ~7.00 ERA in limited innings during their missed starts.

I think the point is more that they have been so freaking bad that even having those guys miss no time doesn't make up the difference. Plus, a lot of other teams have missed a lot more, and better, players.

The problem hasn't been the abilities of the players we lost, so much as the horrific lackthereof of their replacements.

ETA: And I didn't even mention the concept of Tony Campana, starting CF.

ZIPS has to be kidding. The injuries to Wells, Cashner, Byrd, Wood, etc. haven't cost this team some wins??????????? Especially when they have been replaced by the likes of Davis, Lopez, Coleman, Campana, etc. Nobody is saying that it would have made the 2011 Cubs into contenders, but I would think the regulars would have accounted for 4 or 5 more wins at this point.

The Cubs are not the only team who have missed guys. Much better players from around the league have missed considerable time.

The Cubs may not be the only team with injuries, but nobody can convince me that the Cubs' record would be the same with the injuries they have suffered and the replacements they have used.

Well, okay then.

If the organization intends upon having Cashner contribute as a starter in the long term (which the last few paragraphs seem to suggest), I don't really understand the bullpen thing. The 2011 season is long gone. I imagine the casual fan has largely forgotten Cashner even exists; it's not as if there is a deafening public outcry for his speedy return in whatever capacity. Stretch him out slowly so he's ready to start at some point in 2012. God knows we could use a cheap, quality starter.

well he's basically not pitched this year except for a little spring training, so at least if you get him to pitch a little in september and maybe in winter ball then he might be able to handle some innings next year. i'd almost prefer that if you think he's healthy in september, have him pitch... you'll at least get some idea of whether he's broken or healthy, rather than having him be a complete question mark coming into spring training next year.

Cashner threw a bullpen session today. It was his second (his first was on Saturday). The goal is for him to have another one on Wednesday and then will face live pitching Saturday.
