Carroll is just speculating on how bad it could be if the injury gets worse. Which is why he's not throwing the ball anymore. What a douche.

He has been especially dramatic/annoying throughout this whole deal.

Didn't Z have a similar injury in 2009 and was back and completely fine within 3-4 weeks?

EDIT: It might have been 2008.

According to Wikipedia, Z missed 2 games due to rotator cuff tendinitis in 2008. His first game back was the no hitter.

I hope SSR isn't seriously hurt, because we've gone over an hour since a Will Carroll mention without any angry comments from him.

That was the second time that year he hurt it then, because I was thinking about this, which happened in June...

Of course I'm aware shoulder strain and rotator cuff strain aren't exactly the same thing.

Some blogger wondered if Pedro Martinez might be a fit.

From MLBTR:

•Ivy Report asks if Pedro Martinez would be a good fit for the injury-riddled Cubs' rotation.

Muskat tweets that Stevens has been recalled in addition to Cashner and Wells being put on the DL. Wonder if Stevens will be going back to Iowa when Coleman's turn in the rotation comes around.

EDIT: Wittenmeyer says Coleman will be activated Sunday.

I think it's more likely Stevens stays up to replace Russell in the bullpen, if that's who takes the other open rotation spot.

Considering that Stevens probably isn't any better than some of the other options, they might be better served using up Stevens and then sending him down for another reliever to make sure they have bullpen depth for the two new starters. In fact, between Berg, Caridad, Coello, Smit, and Stevens(to say nothing of the SP and LHP on the 40 man), there's no reason that anyone who occupies that roster spot should ever be unavailable at the MLB level while both Wells and Cashner are out.

they really shouldn't have traded archer. since they apparently see carpenter as a reliever and jay jackson's star has faded, they really don't have any solid starting prospects at the upper levels of the minors now.

McNutt.

really hasn't pitched above high A yet, besides a cup of coffee at tennessee last year - realistically a year away at best.

We would be in a bigger hole than we currently are if they hadn't traded for Garza.

i'd argue that they could have gotten garza without giving up archer. the rays are a cash-strapped team with a loaded farm system (especially pitching) and everyone knew they wanted to dump a starter to make room for hellboy. i don't think it was necessary to give them three of our top 10 prospects for garza, especially when one considers what kansas city - a team with similarly limited resources but an atrocious rotation - got in return for a superior pitcher.

Of course that would dispute with every media report that said the Cubs had to give up one of Archer or McNutt in order to beat out the 2-3 other offers for Garza and that the trade negotiations were extremely long. Tampa Bay having very little leverage doesn't matter whatsoever when there are multiple teams bidding. It could be possible that all those reports are wrong or being fed misinformation but it's probably not that likely.

Archer is barely more ready than McNutt is anyway. Archer has done it at a higher level but still is more raw than McNutt is in some ways.

then i would have pitched in a prospect who was farther away from the minors or pulled back hak-ju lee, and if they still say no then just walk away. i don't see that as being a good trade when you're getting back a #3 pitcher from a cash-strapped team that's eager to clear space from their rotation.

Well that could be true (about it not being a good trade). But that's another debate for another thread. For the purposes of this thread, having Archer wouldn't have helped because that would have meant no Garza. The only way the Cubs would have had pitching depth is if they either kept Gorzelanny or Silva. But if they had kept those guys Cashner probably wouldn't have been in the rotation. They had a 6th starter ready to go but clearly weren't ready to have a 7th starter until some of their AA pitchers got a little more experience.

So at this point, if need be, there are a few options out there. Great options? no. good options? probably not. serviceable options? could be.

Ian Snell has already stated that he has been thinking about coming out of retirement. Hes only like 3 years removed from being a hyped prospect, although Wrigley isnt the best atmosphere for a guy with an anxiety disorder.

Doug Davis, though awful last year, could he have a bit left in the tank? several teams reportedly watched him throw yesterday. Not sure if the Cubs were one.

Kevin Milwood, also awful last year. Is there a timef rame in which he can bail on the Yankess if they dont call him up?

ETA: Seeing as the Yankees just signed Carlos Silva to a minor league deal to possible replace the struggling Phil Hughes, Im going to assume that they arent too impressed with what theyve seen so far from MIlwood.

Someone mentioned Pedro Martinez at one point. Could there be any lightening in that bottle?

The best option would probably be Kevin Slowey, if the Twins are willing to move him and not ask too much in return. As mentioned in another thread, maybe a package similar to the one we got for Gorz would get him.

Again, this is only if our in house options all bomb, and Wells misses more time than expected. I dont know how long we can go with both Coleman and some combination of Russell/Diamond/God knows who else in the rotation.

Could this be a good time to start stretching out Carpenter?

I'm not trying to be Kyle here, but is he not a solid starting prospect in the upper levels of the minors?

Just needs to find that one Sammy used a couple of years ago

I really hope that Cashner is fully healthy if he is starting a program, and it's not just seeing if he can pitch with the pain/injury then deal with the ramifications later if he further injures himself.

Wells made his Extended ST debut today as he rehabs - 2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2-2 GO-FO, 48 pitches (28 strikes):

Arizona Phil[/url]"]Making his first appearance in a game since being placed on the 15-day DL on April 5th with a right forearm strain, Wells threw two innings (40 pitches), allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits (three singles, a double, and a triple), with no walks and two strikeouts, and a balk.

Wells retired the first man he faced on a fly out to left on a 2-2 pitch, before allowing a triple into the right-centerfield alley. A spectacular diving catch by CF Kyung-Min Na on a pop fly to short-center saved a run and another base-runner, but the next two batters ripped consecutive two-out RBI hits (a single and a double) to plate the Angels first two runs Wells then recorded the third out of the 1st inning on a 3-1 GO (where Wells had to double-time it to 1st base to just barely beat the batter to the bag).

Wells found himself in trouble again right at the outset of the 2nd inning when a fielding error put the Angels lead-off man on 1st base. A ground out moved the runner up to 2nd, before two singles (on consecutive pitches) drove-in the Angels third run. The big right-hander then got it together and struck out the final two batters he faced, both looking. (Of Wells 28 strikes, ten balls were put into play, three were fouled-off, 11 were called strikes, and four were of the swinging variety).

And Cashner threw a live BP session at Fitch:

RHP Andrew Cashner (rotator cuff) is a bit behind Wells in his rehab, and was limited to throwing a "two-inning" (30 pitch) pre-game "live" BP session on Field #2. One of Cash's pitches hit Augie Ojeda on the foot, sending the diminutive veteran infielder to the clubhouse and knocking him out of the starting lineup of the game on Field #3. For Augie, Fitch Park must be starting to feel like The Hotel California.

Well, at least he's doing some good.
