Huge committment for new Aggie coach Billy Kennedy. Bryan guard J-Mychal Reese has chosen to play ball next year at Texas A&M. He chose us over Kansas & Memphis. He is from neighboring Bryan, TX and his brother is already at A&M.

His dad was also offered a job with a program and accepted it as well. Good timing.

Hahaha good one. You're so very funny and witty. This is just like the Cam Newton recruitment, but without flat out paying the dad. At least basketball has this guy working for the school for the rights for his son to play there.

dude come on, there is plenty of unethical stuff that goes on in college basketball recruiting, just like there is in college football. calling or writing a 16 year old kid who hasn't closed off the recruiting process is like 9000th on the list of concerns.

I don't mind the kid doing it. Just mind the coaches going after those kids.

i mind it if the kid specifically says "i'm done, do not contact me any more, i've committed to _____ and will definitely be attending there." if a coach keeps recruiting a kid at that point, it's over the line (and i think there might actually be rules against it). but if a kid is still two years away from school and has made a soft commitment, i don't have a problem with them being contacted. people change their minds all the time, especially at that age.

John Reese is highly thought of in coaching circles and has had the opportunity to coach in college before now. This isn't a situation where someone close to the player is hired to some made up position to get the kid. He is an assistant coach. John waited until his son made a decision on where hd wanted to play before accepting the job. Kansas has a long history of hiring people to get players (just ask Danny Manning's dad). I'm sure they would have hired Coach Reese to get J-Mike if that's all this was.

If Texas, Kentucky, Kansas, or Baylor did this you would be singing a different tune.

Since it's an accepted practice hopefully Mack Brown offers Dorial Green-Beckham's dad a job soon.

The problem I've had with Kansas doing it is they get rid of the father as soon as the player is gone. In this case I would imagine the father is gonna stay on seems more legit to me then.

When Billy Gillespie was coach he promised a job to DeAndre Jordan's AAU coach to get him to come to A&M. Mark Turgeon honored that promise when he was hired, but I'm pretty sure the guy was gone after one year when Jordan went pro. It's not like I'm saying we're the poster child for college basketball ethics, but I truly believe this situation is different. The Reese's live 5 minutes away from A&M's campus. J-Mike is very familiar with our school & program. His brother already goes to school there. Our program has been pretty good for a while. And so on. But I'm sure I won't change your mind. You continue to believe that J-Mike never would have chose A&M unless we hired his dad. I don't really care.

Kendrick Nunn, 2013 SG from Simeon HS in Chicago, just committed to A&M and we didn't even have to hire any of his family members!

http://scouthoops.scout.com/2/1093100.html

Nunn, a 6-foot-2 guard, committed to Texas A&M, while in College Station (Tex.) for an unofficial visit. Nunn had high major interest from schools across the country, including Memphis and Illinois.

“They are ready to win and they are going to continue to win,” he continued. “They got a vision and we want to be part of that vision in 2013.”

Playing with Meanstreets this summer, Nunn established himself as one of the top guards in the 2013 class. He's currently rated No. 41 overall and is a four-star prospect.

Willis officially backs out on Purdue. Better now than next summer. Lots of talent still available in 2013 and I guess we need room for Garry Harris anyway haha...

2 days before Reese committed, he was quoted as saying he was definitely going to visit Oregon, Louisville, and KU. Then he committed to aTm. A few hours later, his dad took the job.

It's pretty clear the two were related, no matter how hard you want to deny it. And for the record, I'm not upset about it. His dad is a coach. It's within the rules. More power to aTm for doing it.

A couple of things you've said have sort of rankled, though. You said if it were as simple as hiring his dad to get him, KU would have done it. But that doesn't make sense, because KU would have had to have fired a coach in order to hire his dad. You also said KU has a long history of doing this. You've done it twice (Jordan, Reese) and KU's done it twice (Manning, Chalmers.) But yeah, we have a long history of it.

WTF?

For the record, John Reese does not currently have a job on our staff. He has resigned from his HS position and it is expected that he will be hired at A&M, but as of now he has no official job offer.

As far as KU goes, are you sure it's only 2? I remember ESPN doing a piece about this practice & the Jayhawks were the main focus of the story. Baylor was prominently featured for the hiring of a John Wall associate in an attempt to get him.

Evidently Mike Gesell is going to Iowa. Good get, top 100 player going to a team with a lack of top 100 players. Hopefully this will help draw Woodbury with him.

http://thegazette.com/2011/08/08/high-school-coach-mike-gesell-commits-to-iowa/

Yeah this is big. I think Woodbury is going to Iowa unless Kansas or UNC come through with offers. After he had those big camps this spring and was MVP at the NBPA it seemed like that might happen but he cooled off/wore down later in the summer and they both appear to have a few targets in front of him. With Gesell in the bag I think he might come to Iowa even if he got those offers.

Elijah Macon said he's planning on visiting and Kenny Gaines has us in his final 4-5. This could be the best class Iowa has had in a really long time.

To be honest, I think the next commit is probably Ingram, which is fine. Woodbury most likely won't announce for a couple of months. I could see something like this (trying to be realistic)

Myer

Gesell

Woodbury

Ingram

Thurman/Abrahamson

That would be a pretty good haul and pretty realistic, they have a great chance with all of them. I don't know if they'll add a sixth or carry that scholarship over, but I'd look for Fran to try to bring in five. That would be a very good five. I think ESPN has all of them, other than Ingram who's unrated so far, at a 90 or higher. I'd love to see them get at least a serious look from Macon, Gaines and Hornbeak, but I'm not sure how realistic any of them are. Although, supposedly Macon is visiting, which is good, especially with the basketball facility done now.

Just re-read, I meant ESPN rates them at 90 or higher, not where they are ranked. Gesell and Woodbury are both top 100 (with Woody at 51 IIRC). It woldn't quite match Horner/Haluska/Brunner, in terms of overall talent level, but it would be close. Evidently Myer has been making all kinds of noise this summer too, so he may climb in the rankings.

Posted

Yeah Woodbury will most likely wait.

I don't think the odds are that high with Macon and Gaines but Iowa was one of 2-3 schools Macon said he wanted to visit and Gaines just put us in his final 5 last week. Since then Georgia Tech has added a SG. If not, we could become the whitest team in the country.

If they can play the uptempo ball Fran wants to play, they could all be green, I don't care. I just want them to win again. Although, isn't there same law, as in physics or some other science, that says you can't have two gingers on the same team? They'll have Gesell and White together for three years. That won't make the universe explode or anything will it? Their first game together would be in Nov of 2012, the world is supposed to end in Dec 2012...coincidence?

BTW, I'm a ginger too, so don't take this as racially motivated.
