I'm still wondering about the Cubs not announcing a backup catcher yet for precautionary reasons. Why would they need to be precautionary about announcing that Castillo would be sent down at the end of camp? I guess they might be wanting to sneak Ramirez though waivers and feel the secrecy might help in that. There's also a tiny chance that they have picked Castillo for the job-that would make more sense with why it hasn't been announced yet but it flies in the face of everything we've heard to this point.

The idea of "sneaking" someone through waivers is a mythical creature.

Kind of like a unicorn or a leprechaun.

Sneaking may be a misleading term, but it's easier to pass a guy through waivers on 3/30 than it is on 3/1.

Nicely done sir. I'd say that about sums it up.

did something happen to change the cubs' mind, or were those two just wrong? didn't follow that whole soap opera (traveling/didn't care)

I don't know if Bruce ever said that Silva made the 25 man(poor wording on my part), but it seems to me that Wittenmeyer made some inferences rather than getting direct confirmation about Silva.

Just got back from working on the road and only had time for March Madness.

How did Pena look this spring?

Is it set in stone that Hill will beat out Ramirez for the back up job behind the plate?

Pena looked fine this spring. .237/.357/.441 line.

Ramirez was put on waivers and Castillo optioned so Hill did win that job.

Rats on #2. I'm actually surprised Hill is lasting another season. I remember reading a story about how he was going to have the sewn on fingers removed when his baseball career was over as they were causing so much pain. That his career has continued this far is an amazing story, no doubt. I just preferred Ramirez and a little more bat when Soto needed a rest. Especially with the potential of horrific numbers at 2b.

I prefer to think of it as Hill was given the job. Winning the job makes it sound like he did something to earn it.

Am I alone in my thinking that despite the brutal spring training, Blake DeWitts probably the best choice for starting 2B out of the 3 headed monster?

Of course not.

I'd say he's the best of three bad options. Barney's D really turned my head. He and Castro turned some DP's that it looked like they had the same brain. But his bat leaves much to be desired.

There's a reason Baker was released.

DeWitt scares me on defense and his bat has been hardly defensible. But the upside is hard to turn away from. So, yeah, I agree.
