Baker's a much better hitter than either Barney or DeWitt, but hopefully the thing that puts it all together for this year's Cubs is the defense up the middle.

Not real happy about this.

I'm giving Barney a couple weeks to show me that his Camp Colvin treatment gave him the ability to hit the ball with a little authority, but I wish they gave Baker a little more credit for what he can do.

More to the point, if Barney/Baker are the primary 2B, then why exactly is DeWitt on the roster?

I don't think the Cubs would be real comfortable going with 1 backup at 2nd, SS, and 3B for a long period of time. That's probably why DeWitt made it.

As for Barney, does anybody know what the league average ground ball/fly ball ratio is? Seems to me that the Cubs starting staff is more ground ball oriented even with the presence of Garza. That should help Barney's case.

Meh. They're all pretty similar value. We will look to make a trade later if we are still in it.

I'm still a little surprised that Darwin Barney is a real person and not a made up Baseball Mogul name.

if DeWitt still does have any options, we might as well send him down to find his swing or whatever and go with Scales in a reserve IF role

Yesterday, that wouldn't have been a problem.

As of today, Blake DeWitt would have to clear waivers to be sent down.

Not as good as what The Show 2010 gave me. GOOKIE BAXTER 4 LIFE.

Prepare to be one-upped. This name popped up in my brother's game of Baseball Mogul. No kidding, no editing at all.

Spoilered for language (seriously)

I don't think anybody here will disagree that Baker deserves to be facing all the lefties, so I wont adress that half of the platoon.

As far as who is facing righties, I really don't see it as making any difference. DeWitt is probably the best hitter, but is pretty awful on defense. Baker has had awful numbers hitting righties in his career, but nobody has a platoon split that bad. He's probably the 2nd best hitter, as well as about an average defender... maybe a tick above. Barney is the worst hitter of the three, but his skillset probably isn't the type we have to worry about the sort of implosion we might see from Ronny Cedeno. Barney should be pretty much a carbon copy of Ryan Theriot last year (at least on offense) and if the reports are to be believed, he's a plus defender in the field.

None of the three options are good. But they aren't far apart, either.

Any way you want to cut it, we'll probably need to make a move for a 2B if we want to stay in the race all season.

Blake Dewitt screams Bobby Hill to me. I see why people like him but there's just nothing about his game that is impressive at the major league level. I'm all for giving Barney a shot and sending Hill where ever

:?:

When did we get Hill back? Isn't he a security guard at some bank in Thousand Oaks or something?

That said, he'd probably still equal what the Cubs currently have at 2B.

Not sure why you'd want to give Barney a shot if you're such a non-fan of DeWitt and Hill considering that both are/were better than him.

The only positive I see to starting Barney is that he's a plus defender (from everything I've heard). At the same time, there is no plus part of DeWitt's game. He's better offensively overall than Barney, but isn't particularly good either. Thus, since you're going with a young guy anyway, the reasoning would be to go with the guy that already features a plus skill and hope the other side comes around enough. Barney, it sounds like, is Theriot with much better defense and a slightly worse bat.

That said, I'd prefer to go with DeWitt. Both are young but DeWitt has shown more offensive potential. With Aramis, Starlin and Pena around the infield, we have good to very good defense at 3 of 4 positions and can afford to put up with poor 2B defense with the hopes that DeWitt's bat comes around.

Maybe the Cubs ought to play Barney (with Baker) just in case Jaramillo worked some magic on him. The worst that can happen is going back to the DeWitt/Baker platoon that everyone expected anyhow.
