And another thing. Very rarely do these discussions boil down to who is right and who is wrong.

It'd be more accurate to characterize it as a lone Democrat speaking to a roomful of Republicans, or a management stiff at a Teamster's rally. Both sides have valid, yet very different views, and neither would rightly be considered right or wrong. It's not nearly that black and white.

Intelligent, reasonable minds can disagree on all matter of issues, and baseball is certainly no exception.

Let's put it another way:

Why do you think you get so many negative responses when you start breaking down the game?

My theory is it's because you and a select few other prominent posters here get off insulting people and trying to impress your NSBB clique with your relentless snide attacks on anyone not in the clique. It's quite sad and pathetic, actually.

Since you asked.

Except it's not a "select few." The very clear select few are the people that back you up when you go off on one of your misguided baseball crusades.

And it's hilarious how you and huber keep crying about people being mean yet find it completely impossible to take the high road.

Why not be nice?

how silly of me to think that a national author knows more about this then a bunch of internet message board know it alls. The reaction here is ridiculous. I suspect the "NSBB debunking of all things" book to be released with great fanfare later this summer.

You tell me.

Take the high road? How when a supposed moderator of this forum does stupid stuff like this.

How is this moderation? This is a perfect example of what I am talking about on this board. A freaking moderator decides to not be nice and agree that being nice is better than anything else but call out the poster who is trying to call out he other people not being nice.

Thank you for proving yet again why something needs to change around here. All I am asking is for people to be nice to each other. Please respect this and moderate the discussion rather than continue to fuel the fire.

Obviously I am asking for trouble, but this cannot stand from a moderator. I made a post to put an end to all of this yet it doesn't end. Rather, a moderator decides to continue the argument for no good purpose for the board If he wants to question the integrity of my posts that would be fine but in public serves no purpose but to condone the bullies

Let me see if I understand this sequence of events.

Someone starts a thread about this book, and several people are critical of it's premise, even mocking of it.

You join the thread with a post mocking those individuals.

Davearm joins the thread and various histrionics ensue on both sides.

You start in with "why not be nice" and then complain about the response that points out you did the exact opposite of that in this thread, without provocation.

Does that about sum it up?

This might just be the most high and mighty post in the thread, which is a true accomplishment.

You don't get to decide what other people think, and when the discussion ends. The apparent thing the moderator did that "cannot stand" is call you out on your hypocrisy in the thread, when you made an unprovoked attack on individuals in the thread without addressing the topic at all, and you continue to take shots at people while ignoring the point.

maybe he meant "internet message board know it alls" as a compliment?

Certainly possible. Tone is the hardest thing to convey in text.

If you want someone to moderate this thread, I'm more than happy to. Here's my proposal: the poster that made the first personal attack in this thread gets permabanned. Sound good?

You sir, were the first person to say something "not nice" in this thread. You decided to start flinging insults at the message board as a whole, because they dared to mock a book description.

I made a post to put an end to all of this yet it doesn't end.

You did no such thing. You said "why not be nice?"....indicting everyone but yourself as being "mean". If I said "Why not be smart?" to you, would you perceive that as putting an end to things?

There's nothing wrong with having an opinion that doesn't coincide with the majority. But be prepared to defend your opinion, and it's probably best not to throw insults at the entirety of the message board, and then complain about the response.

A good beekeeper would make the bees act nice.

I think what should really be taken from this whole thing is, if you're going to espouse uninformed baseball opinions on a really progressive message board, you need to grow a thicker skin or find more like-minded people.

I think it's really funny when people get flamed for espousing unpopular opinions in the face of solid evidence to the contrary and then complain about the "message board bullies." If you're going to be annoying and consistently contrarian, you need to either get used to being made fun of (a la Kyle and Erik) or leave.

1) The possibility of the book being correct on the premise of the A's and their approach which extends well beyond EXCEL is unlikely. As previously mentioned, "moneyball" is about exploitation of demand weaknesses and not stats. Hell, they have been doing this for years with pitching by get pitchers with less projectable bodies, avg FBs, plus breaking/offspeed pitches and plus command compared to plus projectable bodies/velos. They exploited OBP in regard to scoring runs when avg. And slg were in demand and then when obp had increased demand run prevention became undervalued. Also with the book, the thing that made it interesting was the writing and the inside look of a GM that wasn't sugarcoated.

2) There is group think here, some of which I agree with and some I don't but it is not group think rather than a high percentage of posters with similar views of the game.

Don't make the mistake of commingling unpopular and contrarian with uninformed. Those are two very different things.

Frankly that's at the root of the problem. Too many folks see an opinion they disagree with, and instantly leap to the conclusion that the person speaking it is uninformed, or stupid, or an idiot or whatever. Next they attack the poster and not the post, and just like that a perfectly good thread is in the gutter.

Meanwhile the moderators look the other way, or join in the belittling.

With all due respect, the solution is not for the contrarians to grow thicker skin and take the abuse. That's pure crap. The solution is for the board to be more effectively moderated, and the NSBB community to be more civil and tolerant. Getting rid of that Meph person was a good start. That guy was clearly very bright, but *so* disruptive. Even with him gone this place is still so perpetually hostile it's sad.

There are so very many faulty assumptions posed as fact in this post, there isn't a good place to start dealing with it. Good show.

I hate when people jump into threads and start calling people jerks. The people who do that are the *worst*.
