Welcome to the 24 hour news cycle. If there's nothing newsworthy to report, just make something up and watch it blow up.

 

Even if it is quickly proven to be a misleading crop of a quote, once the story reaches ESPN, its guaranteed to blow up and the real context of the quote is ignored forever.

 

I'd personally be petrified to speak to the media if I was a pro athlete.
