BNightengale: The #marlins have offered Pujols a 10 year deal in excess of 200 million. #StLCardinals expected to counter today

This is exactly what I was hoping for. I sincerely hope that the Cubs, Marlins, RSox, Yanks drive up the price and he ends up sticking with the Cards but killing their payroll flexibility.

Sounds more and more like he'll go to the Marlins.

No and I said I trust him. I just feel we need to grab one of these two as we need a 1B and it certainly will not deter them ftom sticking to their plan.

You can't just decide that one or two players are must-haves. You can't stop one crazy team from overpaying what a player is worth to you.

And Fielder?

Why would the same statement not apply?

Because he will not be getting a 10 year deal worth over 20M per.

You decide how much he's worth to you, you don't go past that, and if someone else does, so be it.

I may be in the minority here but I still think he ends up with the Cards, and all of this is posturing/gamesmanship by his agent. I could be wrong but either way this ends up being a lose-lose for the Cards. He either accepts their offer and kills their future payroll, or he leaves and a huge hole opens up in their lineup. Regardless of where he ends up, this has to be a win for the Cubs. The Cardinals screwed the pooch by not signing him to an extension a couple years ago IMO.

If we do not sign one of these two, I have to admit, I will not be impressed with Theo's initial "doing it the right way schtick". We are not talking about fringe players here, we are talking about two of the very best sluggers in baseball that Tom Ricketts said he would go after should Theo and Jed want to.

I have full trust in him but watching the Marlins go after it this hard does not sit well with me when we happen to have a team that plays baseball in the city of Chicago in front of people who actually give a damn.

Not giving Albert 10 years is a sign of being prudent, imo.

Fielder can be had for less years. As I said, one of the two is what I am looking for. Now if Pujols and Fielder come out and say: "I never had any interest in going to the Cubs", then I can live with that. But if its because we refused to make a serious run at them, then, well.

Less years doesn't mean the same as "a sane number of years." Any team that goes past five years deserves the disaster that awaits them.

At least we'll only have to face him 6 games a year instead of 18.

The Marlins are getting ripped pretty good on here, but if this spending spree results in a third ring in their short history, it would make it pretty hard to deny their method.

I'd suffer through three or four bad years if it meant a championship or two.

If a chronic gambler triples his paycheck at the craps table a few times in a row, it doesn't mean it was a good bet.

Means he probably had a great time though.

This might have been stated earlier today from an espn article.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs spoke to Lozano on Monday and made a qualifying offer to Pujols, according to reports.

The most upsetting thing about the Marlins spending spree is that these guys are agreeing to wear those uniforms.

The difference is that Loria isn't playing with his paycheck, he is playing with his winnings.

We haven't won a WS in 103 years. If you tell me we will win it all next season and then finish DEAD LAST for the next 5 years (or even 10), I'll take it.

I wouldn't. I'd rather have a Braves in the 90's-type situation.

Anyone would because the Braves competed in many WS and actually won one. If they hadn't won that one, would you still pick the Braves?

Nobody can be sure about winning the WS, no matter talent level. Best you can do is try to make the playoffs as much as possible to maximize your opportunities.

It's really a wonder the Braves didn't win more. The playoffs being what they are, being in them as often as possible trumps having the best team on paper every once in a while.

yes because at least you get to see the cubs playing good baseball and in october year in and year out as opposed to watching crap year in and year out
