I know the Cubs contending for the Central is not out of the question but is there any chance the Yankees would be desperate enough to heavily overpay for someone like Dempster or big Z? There is some pitching still out there but not much for impact pitchers, Demp would give them a very solid 3-4 starter and could bring Montero and prospects back. If this could happen the Cubs could then flip Montero and prospects for Greinke.

The Yankees are reluctant to part with Montero for Greinke; they'd never give up him and what few other tradeworthy assets their farm system has to offer for the likes of Dempster or Zambrano.

Have not heard that, all I heard was the Royals openly said they would not trade Greinke to the Yankees.

And what I've heard says the Yankees aren't real keen on giving up Montero in any deal. Matter of who you choose to believe this time of the year, I guess.

Point remains, though: the Yankees have Montero figuring into their plans for 2011 and beyond, big-time. Dempster's been nothing short of solid since returning to the rotation, and he's even been very good at times, but the Yankees wouldn't trade their top prospect for him. Likewise for Zambrano, even if desperation does set in over not bringing in Lee and at the prospect of Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre filling out their rotation next season.

When your best option to start behind the plate is Francisco Cervelli and you have a 20-year old catcher mashing at AAA in the minors primed to take over for the foreseeable future, you tend to want to hold on to that.

That being said, if they were dumb enough to part with him for Zambrano or Dempster, I wouldn't even try and flip him for Greinke. I'd keep him and shop Soto instead

Yanks rotation if season started tomorrow: Sabathia, Hughes, Burnett, Nova, Mitre. Fantastic.

They're working on signing Russ Martin to be their catcher, which would allow them to keep Montero in AAA a little longer for more seasoning. They consider him their catcher for the future and aren't planning on trading him. However, you have to think they might be in panic mode, now.

Their Plan B if they lost out on Lee was to sign Crawford and trade one of Gardner/Granderson/Swisher for a starting pitcher. But the Sox took that option away. Heyman tweeted the Yanks' new Plan B would be to throw money at bullpen help.

They're still the Yankees and still have a good team. But I can't remember the last time they lost out on the free agent they targeted and were left scrambling after.
