Mort is tweeting that Charlie Weis is soon to be named the OC at Florida. Why on earth would he do that?

This would confirm that Applewhite is staying at Texas which is good for news.

Also read that McDaniels would be high on the list for the Chiefs to replace Weis. Don't know if that's true... just read it today.

That would make a lot of sense, considering McDaniel's affection for Cassel, and the ability to rub it in Denver's face. Maybe Haley is pushing Weis out and Charlie knows it.

Rumors I'm seeing are that Haley doesn't like sharing the credit with Weis and wants to run the show himself. Also, Weis has said he prefers the CFB schedule to the pro schedule so he has more time with his family. He was also pretty happy those first 2 years at ND. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the next couple of #1 HS QBs go to Florida.

ETA: we should also keep in mind that Charlie has made a ton of money in the last 12 months so the difference in money is probably not the #1 factor.

Todd Haley is an [expletive] but the guy can coach. I'd be surprised if there was that much friction between him and Weis considering how well the offense is doing.

What makes Haley so awesome? He is more offensive minded and they were 30th last year, now they are 11th with Weis and Cassel is having a great year. Its not like Haley has some pedigree to lean on, what the hell has he ever done. This is like McDaniels running Nolan out of town because of some relationship.

Seems like a strange move for Charlie though. The Florida offense is really going to change and the scheme Meyer ran was freaking awesome.

SB Tribune also says Weis's kid wants to get into coaching and an opportunity for him to be a student assistant at Florida is something Weis would be interested in helping him obtain. I'm a little surprised but not shocked that he'd look to get back into college football.

For what it's worth shnsajax and other Texas fans:

On the first day that might have suited the timetable for Texas to fill its vacancy at defensive coordinator with presumptive leading candidate Justin Wilcox, the UT assistant withdrew his name from consideration and backed up his commitment to coach Derek Dooley and the Vols on New Year’s Eve following Thursday’s 30-27 loss in double overtime to North Carolina in the Music City Bowl in Nashville.

Assuming this is legit, and it probably is, this is really good for UT. Wilcox did about as well as realistically possible with the lack of talent he inherited and continuity is very important for Tennessee at this point.

Haywood was fired from Pitt

so awesome.

when was the last time a coach was hired to a BCS school only to be fired before coaching a game?

Mike Price at Alabama, I think he was hired after Shula and before Saban.

Mike Price at Alabama. I believe O' Leary at ND was the year before that.

That's disappointing, you mentioned Dooley didn't have the requirements Texas had posted. I have no clue to what they are doing.

I don't remember where I read it, but somebody compared their requirements to Teryl Austin's resume and said it matched pretty much perfectly. I think he was also the first guy rumored to have interviewed for it.

He was the hot name after Shannon, then he seemed to have died out. He's not my favorite, right now I would not be surprised to see someone come out of the NFL. Jerry Gray always seems to be mentioned but never highly talked about. As tight lipped as everything has been I am expecting to be surprised on the DC side.

Wisconsin's Chryst is the current name on for the OC. Texas appears to want him and Bostad as Mack Brown wants to adapt a power running game again. With Malcolm Brown coming in, and hopefully Westerman staying on board that would be ideal. Plus them with Applewhite recruiting would make landing Jonathon Grey very possible and give Texas a backfield that would rival anyone in the nation in 2 years.

I figured Major Applewhite would be the OC if he didn't go to Florida.

Sounds like he is going to be names Co-OC without playing calling ability, and a huge raise. He has really turned into one of the best recruiters at Texas, and they really can't afford to lose him. Whoever the OC is will probably be short term till they get a HC job with Major taking over then.

How awesome would it be if Rich Rod was fired from Michigan and then was hired by Pitt? That would make West Virginia fans hate him even more than they already do.

dew.... this Wilcox/Chuck Smith feud apparently has legs. A guy who covers some recruiting for Scout and maybe even looking to jump to 247 said tonight that not only does Wilcox dislike Smith, but that Thompson hates him too. Another guy I know who's fairly close to some current players says that none of the coaches think much of Smith ("great teacher of technique, horrible with teaching x's and o's to a unit...") and that he's likely gone. Scout guy says he's hearing that Sirmon is going to be hired full time to coach LB's, and that Thompson is moving to the DL.

I thought of the same thing as soon as I saw that they fired Haywood.
