if we cant get Carlos Pena, judging by the remaining cast of characters, Id just as soon sign Derrek Lee to a 1 or 2 year deal. Assuming that Miguel Tejada is setting the bar for guys in their late 30's coming off off seasons, he must know he wont be looking at a ton of money from anyone. He may be older, but hes still a much better player than Branyan, Overbay, Johnson, or LaRoche will ever be.

Even if we do sign Lee for a year and an option, I dont see why cant still make a trade for Chris Davis and give him an audition for the future as long as it would only cost us a blocked back up catcher.

I am still on the Pena 1 year deal bandwagon unless the Cubs can get Gordon, call me crazy but if you could get him without giving up any top prospects I would not hesitate to give Loney and shot, maybe a change of scenary could help.

DLee 2010: .340 wOBA - 2.0 WAR

Nick Johnson 2009 (most recent fully healthy year): .373 wOBA - 2.5 WAR

If he can stay healthy, Johnson is a much better option than DLee. He's younger, might come cheaper and is more productive when healthy.

I'd be on board with adding Chris Davis, though.

Guaranteeing or expecting Nick Johnson to stay healthy is like guaranteeing or expecting the next Lady Gaga album not to suck. It's practically inevitable. That being said, I don't have a problem with a small 2 or 1 year incentive laden deal for Lee. He may not be as good an option as Lance Berkman but he's not all that different than Pena.

It's not a matter of expecting or guaranteeing Nick Johnson to stay healthy, that's why you add depth as well (i.e. Chris Davis). It's not like DLee is the picture of health either.

As for Pena, in the worst possible scenario for him last year he had a .324 wOBA. When his BABIP wasn't incredibly low (2009) he had a .373 wOBA. He's also younger than DLee and would be a better option.

We were a better team without d lee. As he got older, he had the Fred McGriff effect.

What does this mean?

He's saying that they're both Black 1st basemen. Obviously that is bad, duh!
