I gotta be honest. I'm Cubs fan more than a baseball fan. That's why. I don't watch teams outside of the Cubs very often at all, unless they somehow impact the Cubs chances.

But even outside of that, 162 games is a long freaking haul if it ends up not mattering in the end. I have better, more enjoyable things I'd rather be doing than watching meaningless, bad baseball.

I'm not necessarily talking about tuning out on a lost Cubs season. If you like baseball at all, how can you not enjoy the September races and subsequent postseason?

Because baseball is boring. If my team isn't playing, the only way I'm watching another regular season game is if I get free tickets to a game or if the game is on in the background at a bar. Yankees games are the worst thing on television. I'll turn on the playoffs, but won't have trouble walking away or ignoring it.

Yankees games are the worst thing on television because Michael Kay is the announcer. Baseball is awesome.

In 10 or so years when baseball is a solvable equation actually watching the games will seem quaint.

I love a good division race as much as the next baseball fan, but there is really only one that's been compelling at all, and that's the NL West. I'm really excited to watch the Rangers and Reds in the playoffs, though. I think this year's playoffs are going to be really interesting. The NL matchups, especially, are gonna be pretty great. Bring on October

This is true. I know some Yankees fans who don't care about this september. It doesn't matter. A few actually prefer the wild card so they can face Minnesota.

yeah, I enjoy great races, but we don't have much of that this season. I still watch baseball during the week, but I'm not as interested as I was a few months ago or as I will be in October.

A good race is rare. The default is anticlimactic September.

I guess it might depend on your perspective. A really good buddy of mine is a Twins fan and they've basically buried the Sox over the last week or two. He couldn't be enjoying the race more than he is right now.

Well yeah, a fan of a team running away with a division is going to enjoy that, unless you're a Braves or Yankees fan.

and a White Sox fan would be pretty interested, though disappointed with the results.

the point is, there were some races that were good enough for fans of those teams to be interested. but maybe not good enough to keep general baseball fans interested into September. I don't think good races are as rare as you made them out to be, is my point.

Well I disagree. It's rare, and every year everybody acts all surprised that there aren't any interesting races.

The White Sox fans may have had some hope two weeks ago, but September is a long time and they've been out of it for pretty much the entire month. They pretended this last series was meaningful, but it really wasn't.

No kidding. I'd say the Rangers are my second favorite team. I love watching them play and really think they have a great chance in the playoffs. A friend of mine lives in Dallas and is a die-hard Rangers fan. They can relate to Cubs fans pain and even now as good as they've done and as much of a sure thing as the playoffs are for them, they are willing to count any chickens before their hatched.

No, they can't. Nobody can. Except other Cubs fans.

there's plenty of teams with misery. shaddap

for example, a 27 year old fan of the following teams have never experienced a world series title, and definitely have had miserable moments following their team:

Rays

Orioles (infant when the team won)

Tigers (very young baby when team won, no memory of title)

Indians

Royals (too young to remember title)

Rangers

Mariners

Expos/Nationals

Astros

Brewers

Pirates

Padres

Giants

Rockies

I'm excited to watch the Reds fail in the playoffs.

So am I, I'm hoping for a 4th consecutive sweep of the NL Central champ.

That's what made is so fun to see the Twins sweep the crap out of the Sox - their fans were on the verge of suicide.
